my '08 usually has no issues with shifting but occasionally ( about six times in the past three years) when accelerating in 1st and at 6000-6500 rpm go to shift to 2nd the lever won't move until I let the bike slow slightly and then it shifts fine. I have consistently shifted from 1st to 2nd at anywhere from 4500 to 7500 and 99% of the time it shifts cleanly. (it has nothing to do with the oil, has done it on HD syn and on Amsoil I've been running for two years)

I am having a similar problem with my 02. This morning went to go for a ride and it kept kicking me from 2nd to N, now I can't shift into 2 without holding the shifter up with my toe.. HD said something needs to be changed on the outside of the shaft although they may need to split the casing??? Wondering if there is something I can do without taking it to them as they are 50 miles away....

Check the least expensive possibilities first. You would probably benefit from bleeding the clutch fluid and check and checking for any binding caused by corrosion on both the hand lever and foot shifter. Then look at your neutral switch then clutch slave and plates.
My issue was solved by step 2.

I have had more trouble when pulling the clutch in all the way on this bike.Infact my bike clutchless shifted like a dream. Most people I know will barley give the lever a squeeze to get the smoothest shift and preload the shifter and this is on any bike.Maybe yours is new or the linkage is out of adjustment.Oil does make a slight difference as well but not a whole lot.

This has happened to me 3 times now, each time ended in a new transmission being installed.

My bike was gone for quite a while and looked like this, every thing was under my extended warranty or else it would have been $2400 each time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you use Amsoil?
1st time happened after I bought it used dont know what he did to it for the 2 years he had it, the next time was installed wrong by dealership and went again after 8k, the next time it blew after 70k miles, dunno why, used a combo of Motul, Mobil 1 and Amsoil during that time frame.

A slipper clutch is designed to keep the rear wheel from losing traction during engine braking.

@ Sleazy = It also means that the lever preasure required is reduced as there are only 4 spings not 5 as in the standard.

It is a very easy and very good Mod to do, it makes shifting even easier,

To add to the great oil debate, my clutch was ruined by a previous owner that used normal ~Harley oil that was for dry clutches. The rods use a wet clutch and the plates are easily screwed by the friction eliminators used in normal car / HD oils.

If this is a new bike and HD have inadvertantly used the wrong oil at a service this can cause the bike to shift bad.

Hmm Curious.

As a counter to that I've been using car oil for thousands of miles with no problem......
Not saying I am willing to try it but you have my attention. What kind of oil and how many miles exactly?

I am probably opening another can of worms but, there are probably frugal people that run regular 87 octane fuel as well but that doesn't mean it won't eventually do harm to the motor.

I just don't think I would risk using the wrong fluids just to save, at most, 10's of dollars a year. I'll skip a meal or two first.
