Clear coating is spraying a polished wheel with clear paint. Anodizing is actually a controlled chemical corrosion process, when done the anodizing finish is less than .010 of an inch thick. It can be done clear or in some colors. Long term, a clear paint finish may yellow with the effects of sunlight, but probably take a long time to do so. Anodizing finish is usually semi glossy where paint is quite glossy. Also, anodizing can still somewhat stain from hard water. Me, I'd lean towards clear coating with a paint finish, Ozzy seems to be an expert on paint finishes.

I got a great deal from Ozzy on my chrome rims and I love them ;) . I put them on this weekend with my new Metz I bought on the group purchase :sinister: . I am so happy I could just :paper: . I posted a how to last night for my front tire swap and will post the rear tire swap tonight. This site has the best people, greatest knowledge, cool friends and different ideas but boy has it been :broke:.
Thanks to everyone here :notworth:

Take a gray scotch-brite and rub your hardcoated skins (don't worry it wont do a thing) then rub the clear on your car (don't worry a little fine compound will take it those scratches right out.
I have sanded and painted many V-Rods and beleive me this stuff is tough.

Hardcoat anodizing does sound better.....I'll take my wheels done in black please. Okie, anybody close to you does the hardcoat? I'm just east of B.R.

Chrome.
I never heard of anyone complaining that the bike they're looking at has too much chrome or too much horsepower. The VRSCB comes standard with a certain amount of chrome just for accent. You can carry it to the wheels, also, IMO.
I sent my factory wheels out 4 (read four) times to be chromed. I guess they are very porous and difficult to get a perfect job done. Same reason, perhaps, why they stain so bad.
I wanted the "stock" style/look. I also noticed that a lot of the open-wheel style wheel is covered on both sides of the front wheel by brake rotors, and the back wheel by saddlebags, etc.
I wanted ease of maintenance. No elbow grease. No cavities. Life is too short.
I just changed the chrome wheels out for Harley-Davidson chrome wheels. Much improved chrome quality - flawless wheels.
The wife doesn't have to work too hard when we arrive at our destination...

No, theres not even a chromer around these parts that will touch aluminum wheels.

Chromed... I come in after a ride, wipe them down, and done!!! With that being said... I have not yet replaced the tires (other than them being remounted, which went OK). So here's to the next time I get tires and a 200 on the back (keeping my fingers crossed)

I've been talking with an anodizer. He says hardcoat "clear" is very dark and would turn wheels dark gray. He said our skins are type 2 anodized and he has done v-rod wheels. I'm waiting on a price.

The guys name is Rick Hunter at A.M. Metal in Orlando http://www.ammetal.com/
It's 75.00 a wheel with a 5 day turn around. This is a clear anodize and if you send them a stained wheel it will come back stained under the coating.

To chrome or not to chrome

The thing about chrome is once you start...
I would never put chrome on a bike again because of several reasons.
1) It peels and rusts
2) Its heavier then paint, billet can shine up nearly as well
3) It has to be balanced with more chrome on the bike
4) It traps heat
5) It looks like crap even after a short ride so while your friends are lff having fun your left quick-shining up your chrome
6) Did I say its heavy

Great info Okie! Please keep us informed.

Different types of aluminum metal (like 5000 series, 6000 series or 7000 series) will produce different shades of gray after anodizing. Be ready for slight color shade differences between the air box skins and the wheels. Our skins are possibly 5000 series...

My experience with Hard coat Anodizing is that the black has a deep yellow hue to it. Sometimes it looks more dark brown then black. Visit the place and ask to see samples. I've never seen Hard coat Anodizing in clear... but the coating itself is incredibly abrasion and wear resistant. Not necessarily a trait that is needed on a wheel.
