Burning alot of fuel and running poorly.

Just bought my first Harley.....a 2005 V-rod and I love it. Purchased it with 8500 miles on it and its in very good condition. But lately its been burning alot of fuel and running a little rough. Pulled the air cleaner and had a look at around, everything looks fine. Using premium fuel to see if it was a fuel issue. Always had japanese bikes so looking around the tight quarters of the v-rod is a little intimidating. Any thoughts out there or should I take it to a H/D dealer to get plugged in for codes?

Our bikes come very lean from factory and really require a proper tune .....Not sure how long u had it etc.....but that should be one of the first things to do is tuner, air filter and pipes to open it up a bit.............

I am thinking that I will take a little visit to the dealer to get it plugged in to read any possible codes. I bought the bike about 2 months ago and just changed the wheels from spoked to solid aluminium, they look much better, but will take a little while longer to adjust to the feel of the solid wheels reacting to the winds. The bike hadnt been used in 2 years and had been stored so I am thinking that it just may need some tuning.

I wouldnt go to a dealer...too much $$$$....find an Indie shop near you and have them do the work......oil, plugs etc etc etc ....or you could do yourself........get a manual to help...........

Would you recommend some type of a fuel additive to clean the injectors? I have never owned a fuel injected bike before. Done mind tackling a carb or two but dont know anything about fuel injection. There is a dealer 5 minutes from my home and was just thinking that they could plug it in to check for any codes. I had been looking around the bike and figured out that even changing the plugs are labour intensive!!

Not sure of fuel additive......our fuel over here is high octane so we are good...others will chime in.............Dealers will charge you probably $100 an hour.....depends if you wanna pay for them to fumble around your bike............What location are you at and others will chime in if there is other indie shops in your location........

Not sure of their labour rates, but I am sure it isnt cheap. My thinking was for them to plug into the bikes computer. The other thought you mentioned was the fuel octane level is also fine here in canada, but my concern was where it was laid up in storage for a year or so, maybe I could potentially us some type of an additive to clean up the injection system. There are a few shops in my area but wasnt sure if it would be beneficial to let HD have a look. I should just suck it up and do the work myself. Not a real big deal to change oil and filter, plugs and air cleaner I guess. Just a little intimidated by the technology.

A lot of VRODers use a synthetic oil (AMSOIL, Mobile). If you go with a high flow Air filter (K&M or AMSOIL) you are going to affect the tune..

The Power Commander/refueler plugs in to the ECM and changes the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR). The stock tune is set very lean for emissions purposes. If the previous owner had it tuned with a dyno, the AFR will be much richer and mileage will be around 32-38mpg.
There are many different tuners out there for the VROD. Look thru the EFI section to get an idea of what you want or can use depending on the year/model of your bike

Thanks Dr Dave, I will have a look around my vrod to check for these items. There arent many places to hide once remove the seat and airbox. These items can be unplugged? Then try the bike for a running change. Do I have to unplug the main fuse on the right side of the breather while doing these checks. I have been reading alot on this site and thats mentioned a few times. Will check for any possible codes that may come up on the console first I guess>
