Hi

Does anybody have crash bars on their bike
Does it protect the bike,
and does it spoil the look?

Ray

Meh...everybody has their own opinion, and I respect it, but IMHO, that looks like crap.

Definitely takes away from the "look" of a V-Rod.

I have them on mine.....but I haven't tested them...
Does spoil the look but I'm a safety first type dude.
In the winter I put chaps on them and my feet stay toasty warm.
The chaps on the crash bar caught a gutter nail once that would have got my let.

I was never a fan of the V-Rod crash bars, but I always liked the Lindby-style highway bars... so I modded a set of the factory bars. I love the way they turned out, not nearly as bulky-looking as the originals. Still very functional, and makes a great alternate footrest for the long rides.

Has anyone had a serious off with crash bars fitted?
The tubing appears to be flattened where they mount to the foot controls which will seriously compromise the strength of the bars.
And those ones with a pointy bit at the end look perfect for digging into the tarmac and spinning the bike around......

Twice now actually, and one minor.... I will not ride my bike one inch without them. Once when I hit a deer, they saved me a certain leg fracture!

I crashed my AW and didnt have crash bars. the foot peg hitting the ground caused the frame to bend. it was easily fixed by unbolting that part of the frame and putting in a new one. I told the shop that I wish I had crash bars and they said if i did the top part of the frame would probably have bent and it would be a lot more costly to fix.

I doubt that there is such a thing as a real crash bar: engine guards, yes. Like helmets, they are an item with an unpredictable need, but when you do you do. So, I have had them 'pay off' three times so far with the V, slipping on gravel and having leg and bike saved, having the bike hop off the stand when stupidly starting in gear (mindless, really) and zero damage with the guard, and a nasty stall out and dropping over, again with no damage.
On my BMW, I had the bars save the bike from damage when it was knocked over by idiots in cars and clumsy people walking by and blundering into it and when it was flipped over by nasty winds while covered (maybe a half dozen times over the years).
My old Hydraglide fell on me and would have squashed my leg,....
And so it goes. it is a trade-off between appearance (less good than without) and visual trade-off insurance.
As with helmets, maybe you never will need one, but if you do and don't, you pay whatever price/repair bill is the consequence. Helmets I have only really (REALLY, like dead without) needed twice in 45 years of annual riding, and very much never want to need again.

Crash bars are worth it, especially when it lays down while you are almost at a dead stop at a gas station.!!! Fortune is the bars some what hold the bike up so you don't scratch up the mirrors and pegs..
Any one have any idea about rear bars to protect the saddle bags.

I got hit on the left side, and I didn't have a crash guard. I really don't think it would have done any good though. The foot peg mount weld at the frame was broken cleanly which is where these bars mount.

The shift rod wrapped around by leg and pinned it to the bike. I think the crash bar would have done the same thing or just broke off. These bars are good for fog lights, highway pegs and tipovers--not crash protection.

Those look good...wouldn't mind a set myself.

I agree...to each their own...just not mine.

Fehling Engine Protection

Hi

I have a set of Fehling Engine Guards on mine. Check out my posts on 1130cc and you should be able to see a bunch of pics of my bike with the Fehling set on my bike. They are much stronger and better looking than the H-D guards. I got them to have some sort of protection for my Trask Turbo system. It worked out just fine.

Put the H-D sport ( smaller ) engine guards on my '06 R model, mainly to mount some LED driving lights and fwd. hwy foot pegs. Two weeks later 3 states away got backed into in a parking lot by a young lady looking at her cell phone instead of behind her. Knocked me over, hit my helmeted head on the tarmac, bent the clutch lever and that was it - picked the bike up, bent the lever back and rode it away, no crushed left leg or anything. Never really liked them but yea, they work. Some guys get them powder coated black to reduce their visibility. I may do the same but I'm a believer. Hope I don't lay it down at speed but they will work like sport bike nylon crash pucks just might grind off some more chrome.
