I am going to look at a 2004 V-rod with 11,000 miles this afternoon. While getting directions, the seller told me that he took the mufflers off so it would sound good. Would this hurt the engine any? I am thinking if the air cleaner is stock then it should be OK. Am I right? I used to have a 2008 VRSCDX and miss the V-rod alot so I am trying to find a decent used one. Thanks

the power must be absolutely shit, but as far as hurting the engine.... If he did not put a tuner on there, I would be VERY attentive when you test ride and listen to the engine. Back then the bikes weren't nearly as leaned out as they are now, but still not a good thing.

Removing the mufflers and/or adding air flow can lean out the A/F ratio/mixture, if the computer can not compensate fully, which I doubt, then the engine can run very hot, the spark or "burn" can actually cause damage like a damn plasma cutter almost. If he did not re-tune or re-map the fuel management he's playing dangerously.

what should I be listening for? thanks

if you had a vrod previously then you know what a vrod is supposed to sound like. if it sounds anything different then beware, its just the chance you take buying used. your not an idiot or you wouldn't have made it this far.

NO MUFFLERS WILL HURT YOUR EARS!!!!! when I wrapped my pipes I started it just for a second to see how it sounded w/o mufflers, under my carport.....F'N Ridiculous, the concrete was shaking under my feet, a couple hours of that you would be dealing with a serious headache..

Pass and look at another bike. If this guy is stupid enough to think that no mufflers is "cool" then he is probably too stupid to maintain the bike.

Just my $.02

and a damned good 2 pennys of advice too because running a Revo without mufflers would mean the sprockets should have been changed and the engine would be tuned for wot runs.
If the idiot left the mufflers off and ran the engine for miles without a proper dyno tune and a real tuning device, the best way to check the combustion chamber components,is to disassemble the engine for a visual inspection.anything less is just a guess.

and BTW,aint no way in hell does a Revo sound good without mufflers unless it's going down the track at wot.
