Speedometer needle melting

:driving: I have been lookin for any threads regarding the speedometer needle melting and haven't seen any, so i am writing this as a FYI. I have a 2004 VRSCB and it has a chrome bezel aroound the instruments. well this shortly after taking the bike out this year i noticed that the speedo needle base (the black base that holds the pointer) looked a little bit like it was melted, but didn't think much of it at that time. well 2 months later it looked a whole lot worse and 1 month after that it looked like it was going to fall of the pin it was so bad. well as usaul the stealer said they have never heard of it and that it was probably not covered under warranty, well i freaked and as it turned out they had to change the whole instrument cluster because the shiny chrome bezel was causing the sun to be magnified and melt the plastic base. when i went to pick it up the service guy said that there was a maintenence bulletin out on them so anybody that has a chrome bezel may want to check there speedo needle. i met up with another v-rod that had just started melting.

There is indeed a service bulletin out for this problem and it is a dealer warrentied item. HD sent me a letter in the mail advising me to have it replaced. The bezel they will put on has a cross-pattern engraved into it. Appearently this should reflect the light away from the gauge face. I never had mine done, cause the dealer told me I would have to leave the bike to have it installed.

Does anyone have a photo of the replacement bezel?

Of course if the idiot service manager was actually doing his job and reading all the bulletins that come in he would have known that when you first presented with the problem.

Why can't people actually DO THEIR JOBS at dealerships??????

My needle also started to melt on my 04 "B" when it had 2800 miles on it. Dealer called me up and said that they could order a new cluster with the correct mileage and that would take 2 weeks, or they had one in stock, but the mileage said 920 miles. I took the one they had in stock.

Is the mileage stored on the cluster or in the computer?????

I had the same problem with my -4 VRSCB and the Dealer has ordered a new Speedo housing. I noticed that the 06 modles had this sand blasted effect bezel and thought it was not as good as mine - little did I know that HD had figured out the problem and this is their fix. Some times the best engineers do not have all the answers - who would have thought that the innocent bezel would act as catalist for the sun. HD says they will make it right, my my!!.

b model problem only
I don't understand why it is a B model problem only. I know the tech bulletin released by HD only lists B's but someone posted a pic of there gauge cluster that melted and it looked just like the one on my A model - except for mine is not melted.
