RPM Problems

Just a quick question to see if anyone has the information that I'm looking for. My 2006 VRSCR w/ Trask Turbo runs very rough around 8000-9500 rpm. It doesn't do this all the time, just when at idle, and first gear. I've checked all the vacuum lines, all the connections, the electrical system is fully intact (no loose connections, or grounds), the bike was fully warmed up. Any ideas?

You can check your fuel pressure with a gauge pretty easy.
Although I think mine is the only fuel pump I remember reading about going bad, it doesn't hurt to check it and rule it out.
There's a schrader valve between the cylinders and then I just temperarily taped the gauge to the frame and went for a ride to watch it thru the whole rpm range under load.

Thanks for the info Jeff, but just outta curiousity, if it were the fuel pressure, wouldn't it happen in all gears, not just first? 2nd and 3rd pulled strong all the way to redline... am going to email Nick to see if he can send me my map that he made for my bike and try to reload it, maybe the ecu's info got corrupted.

Mine was pretty irradict- as the pump went bad, I had symptoms of it for almost a year and then I started to see brass shavings in the tank.
I had to ride the bike to see when the pressure dropped and it wasn't always at the same time or speeds like I thought it was. The top gears and higher speeds tho are where it ran it's worst- needing the most fuel under those conditions.
Sitting at idle it had good pressure, even reving the engine in nuetral didn't show anything.

Just started, so I think it's data corruption, Nick is sending me the new map that he made for my bike when I had it dyno'd earlier this year @ his shop in phoenix.

Jan and Jeff. Here's the deal. Sunday night, I was out at the drags, I rode my bike there and the engine was good and warm. I let it sit for about 30 minutes while I awaited my turn to run. Then I went back to my bike, let it idle until the fans kicked on, then rode it around the back area to ensure proper warm up. When I got back to the pre-staging area, I put the bike in neutral and revved it to redline, (to ensure that it would reach redline of 9500 instead of the warm-up phase redline of 8000) from 8-9.5. It was during this time that the bike had the problem in the 8000 to 9500 rpm range. It did it again in first gear during the actual run. But like I said, 2nd and 3rd gear preformed flawlessly. I'm going to reload my custom map and give it test to see if that was the problem. I'm also going to be getting and installing the TwinScanII+ device so that I can adjust my map according to my actual riding instead of dyno testing. Will keep you posted.

In 1st gear and especially in neutral with almost no load and with high rpm the ecm has very little time to react and the changes needed are very small.
In principle 8k+ rpm in neutral is well outside normal operating parameters.
The trask turbo kit EFI adjustments depend a lot on mechanical components like rising rate fuel pressure regulator, I assume such equipment needs a bit of time to "get into gear".

Jan, point made on the neutral, w/o any load it's not making any boost, so it could be running too rich and causing issues, but that doesn't explain 1st gear under full load in a drag race. Or does it?

Problem solved. Got my custom map reloaded and the bike is running fine. Although it has been running a bit warm. Fans come on frequently. Thought it might be the coolant level, checked that, completely full. gonna have to give this one up to the altitude, heat, humidity that I've been riding in lately. Thanks all for your input.

My fans want hardly come on!

I am glad you worked it out, but just to let you know that IC has really changed the way my bike deals with heat. I know you have it hot there but we run fairly warm here in Florida and my bike fans rarely come on! Jeb

Yeah, I'm planning on getting an IC when I can afford one :p Gotta pay for the rally first!
