I have a full factory mid control kit that I'm saving for a rainy day project.
I can crack it open and photograph the parts.

 

I just swapped my mid controls for forward controls, you'll need the mid controls obviously, right side motor mount for mids because the brake control mounts to it, brake line/switch from foot control to rear brake, brake master cylinder and the clutch rod that connects clutch pedle to clutch.

I had my Harley parts guy price every piece for a complete kit. The parts are available separately but cost over $1000! I searched everywhere for a kit for 8 -9 months (called dealers thoughtout US) before stumbling on a kit on ebay for $160. I bought it in a heartbeat and love it.

I installed myself - not too bad. Also you DO have to buy the brake line recommended in the instructions ($180). I tried to cheap out and had a line made for $50. Brake didnt work and felt like air in the lines so I chased that for weeks but it was the line I had made all along. After all this time I feel I'm a mid control kit expert.

Also depending on the exhuast the brake pedal has a good chance in hitting the pipe. I brought mine to a fabricator and told him what I needed done, we discussed ideas and he wound up cutting the pedal using round stock to space it out (for pipe clearance) and welding back together. The guy did a phenominal job, can't notice the mod. I was standing on the pedal and have absolute confidence that its NEVER going to break (not brake - it brakes great!) charged me $50 - also a Harley rider -lol. Good luck in your search. World of difference in comfort and handling with mids while retaining the forward pegs if I want to stretch out

PS: I have ABS model and needed the line from the master clyinder to abs unit - order Harley's part for that

I am finding all of the individual parts a little at a time. Unfortunately, I am spending a fortune to get them all.

After you installed your kit, is there any part you would feel that would eventually break over time and need replacing? If so, please let me know. Since I am collecting pieces, I may as well have a few spares just in case (if necessary). Thanks.

 

Sorry to post on this thread after a year...I am looking for a mid control kit for the VRSCDX. Since they are all sold out, does anyone have out-of-the-box ideas on how to create my own kit?

JoeCam....in your last post, you mentioned that someone at Harley was able to breakdown all of the parts needed to build a kit, but that it would cost more than $1000. Do you have that list of parts? If not, how did you approach the parts specialist at Harley with your questions? In other words, do you remember what you said to the parts specialist on how they could potentially build a kit from scratch? I want to approach my local Harley dealership the same way you did so I can get a list of all parts and costs.

Did you look at the link in my post? It has the parts list on the last pages (with part numbers). I used that and worked with my parts guy for availability and price. Like said it came out to $1000 with all the parts separately. Hope that helps.

Also...

Set eBay and Craigslist searches to send you an email when your saved search gets a hit. I woke up one Sunday saw a search hit notification and bought it immediately. I was lucky enough to get a complete kit with exception of right engine mount ( found a few days later on ebay when that also popped up). Set your search to "vrod mid controls" (I think I used that). You may be able to build kit with what you find in pieces and supplement that with new parts to save money. The wide search will have you looking at many unrelated posts, but it was worth it for sure. Good luck.

The left side (shifter) parts are just linkages and mount so nothing should break under normal circumstances. The right side is more complicated (brakes), but again, none of the hardware should break under normal circumstances and the brake system (master cyl and line for the mids) should not have a problem. I wouldn't worry about replacement parts for this conversion, spend the money elsewhere.

Now if you want to plan for an accident (which is no way to ride) the shift lever and brake pedal will probably be toast but spending money on that "what if" seems a bit much.

 

Thanks for your advice. You are correct in that I am not purchasing parts in case of an accident. (If I did, I would question why I would ride in the first place.) I was just wondering if the smaller parts become worn over time and would eventually need replacement. For example the "Spring, footpeg pivot pin return" (45065-06).

Maybe a good analogy would be everyone's use of the forward controls. They have similar moving parts with multiple pins and linkages. If those parts rarely (if ever) need replacing, then the mid control kit should exhibit the same longevity.

 

The parts list for the mid control kit provides the parts numbers for the individual parts that you have to buy in order to re-create the complete kit. I noticed the lists also contain parts that are mentioned in the diagrams but not part of the kit. I have been studying the parts diagrams and have begun to figure out what some of those parts are. Below is what I have been able to learn so far. I am uncertain if these parts are correct until I consult a parts specialist at HD. If anyone has additional information, corrections, etc., please let me know.

Remember that the parts below are not part of the mid-control kit. I am assuming these parts are on the bike's forward controls already, thus becoming familiar with these pieces would be helpful before trying to install a kit yourself.

I am in process of making a mid control kit. Have to source the brake MC and get everything modeled and get the prototype done. Design is probably going to change a little bit from the pic, but will be adjustable and will be made to fit most bikes and exhausts.

I have a set that Im not using. My 06d came with forwards on it. The guy had mids mounted on the bike but took em off. PM me im in dayton ohio and can send pics. Im not sure what parts for the mids are still on if there is any.
