How do you clean and re-oil a K&N air filter? What solvent, which oil, etc.
All I could find was instructions using their kit, but I know there's got to be a different way.
Also, what are the benefits/advantages of a K&N oiled filter Vs. an SE dry filter. (I ended up with both, and need to pick one)

Thanks for the input! :thumb:

For the K&N I've always used their kit. Not sure what exactly they use for a cleaner. As for the S-E you clean it with compressed air from the inside blowing out.

The cleaner is just a basic degreaser / cleaner. I've had a K&N on my Ninja for years. Don't have one for the V yet. But, I got tired of spending so much on the kit so for the past several years I've been using the Simple Green spray, let it sit for a little bit the hose it from the inside out and dry it good. I bought a can of PJ1 spray-on air filter oil. Just a light shot is all you need. It has worked well for me for a long time.

Use the cleaner, let it set for a short time to degrease the filter. The hose off the filter really well. Let the filter dry completely, then re-oil the filter. Let the filter set for a few hours with the new oil then install.

Pondo KNs air tits the only way I roll, literally in every car I drive! You can purchase the re-charger kit, as they call it, at any auto parts store.

buy there kit. it explains everything

I bought the k&n kit at walmart

Big difference in the 2 filters is you don't have to oil and clean the SE filter. Big time saver.

Well in chilly cold wintery OHIO I need something to do!
If u r not careful though to much air pressure and u could blow a hole thru the SE filter when cleaning it. Just a thought!

CFR no filter???

I assume that when I install the cfr pipe and fueler I should install the K and N filter at the same time. Just didnt know if that would affect the results of the setting on the tuner or not with the stock filter. Where is the best place to buy one? Just trying to save a buck or two Thanks!!

I'm sure you can find it online somewhere, but I bought mine through Auto-Zone. Anywhere that sells K&N should be able to order it for you. The part # is HD-1102.

I got mine off of eBay from fuel motto.

The K & N, properly maintained, will flow slightly more air than the SE filter, and probably be more durable.

Most of the time I just blow mine out from the inside and make sure it's reasonably clean. When it does need cleaning you can use anything that will cut the spray-on filter oil, then use any good filter oil. I use K & N's kit because it just doesn't cost that much for the once or twice a year you need it (unless, of course, you live on a farm).

I can't say that isn't so. My understanding is that in the case of a routine dose of farm roads you'd want to pay much more attention to keeping the thing oiled. I also have been told that AMSOIL's filter somehow allows even more flow than the K & N, but has much smaller maximum porosity, for a cleaner intake flow. Might be worth a look if you live in dusty conditions but want high intake flow.

The AMSOIL air filter flows better than stock and filters better than stock and K&N. It is the same concept that they use with the oil filters. Synthetic media allows for small diameter fibers which can be placed closer together yet are fine enough to allow for minimum resistance. I had the K&N on my V-Rod and when I put the AMSOIL filter in I noticed no difference in performance but feel MUCH better knowing that I am not letting all kinds of dust through.

Oil analysis results consistantly show higher Silicon in the oil when the user used a wet gauze air filter. This means that more "crud" is getting through.

Best part is the AMSOIL filter costs less than both the K&N and SE filters. Roughly $47 shipped depending on location. Another nice thing is the AMSOIL filter requires no cleaning kit or oil which minimizes future expense.
