Picked up my first bike in a while about six months ago - emailed my local (regional insurance company) provider and had them add it to my auto policy...

Just before Christmas I picked up an Orange County Chopper and made the same call - but about fell over when I got the invoice in the mail this week and saw that it added about $1,000/year to my policy all by itself - and my agent said that when my policy renews in July they would have to shop it out to a specialty insurance company.

Came on here earlier today to start a thread asking “who’s a good insurance company?” when I saw there’s actually a link in the header that says insurance - so hit it and then called Geico.

Annual cost for two bikes just went from $1,648 to $652 and I’m a HAPPY BOY! :)

Enjoy the savings now, Geico is just like the others, they give you a low rate the first year to get you in, then it will creep up the following years. Then, when you leave them to go to someone like Progressive who plays the same game, they'll start sending you low rates again to lure you back. If you go back, then Progressive will start quoting you low rates to get you back.

I've been pitting the two against each other for the last decade. Right now, Progressive is winning, but Geico is still trying to lure me back.

Too bad neither exist in Ontario. Wish they did, as the insurers here really need a good ass kicking with their bloated rates. 1373.00 a year with TD insurance which is the best deal I could find.

Identical system over here.
But I am calling my insurance company each year and tell èm I will not accept a price increase.
Works ok! Price? 1 Harley= 270$ a year fully covered.

Back when I had the FXR as well as the Street Rod ,my total cost per year ,full coverage,12 month,no lay up was $364.07.

Now that I'm down to just the Street Rod, I pay ~ $146 .00 for that coverage.
It helps that my house and truck are also insured by them.

State Farm;yeah I've heard the horror stories about them too. All I have to say is they beat the hell out of the prices I paid when I was younger. I'm 66

True test of a good insurer is when you make a claim.

Insurance for Bikers against Uninsured Scumbags.

Make sure you have 100K/300K Bodily Injury Liability and 100/300K Uninsured Motorist Stacked coverage ( plays off your auto policy ) You are basically buying insurance for the scumbags that drive around without insurance coverage and hit you. Without it if you get hit by a scumbag and get all busted up you will have nothing but 10K Motorcycle medical payment limit off your policy and whatever your health insurance ( if you have some ) will cover. Was in a jury pool for a suit against State Farm where a policyholder had to hire a lawyer to fight them for full uninsured coverage after being wiped out by a drunk driver with no insurance. NOT FUN. As I write this the State Farm ad is above this box. THAT'S FUNNY. Anyway with Geico my Triumph is $ 668 a year, the V Rod R is $ 778 a year both together is $ 1335 yearly. Not cheap but just remember when you're flying thru the air its too late to put a helmet on or to be insured against the scumbag with no insurance that just hit you. To lower costs I sometimes drop one bike during the summer when its too hot, wet to ride or when I'm doing extended work on one. :blahblah: :D

Good solid advice on the UI motorist coverage. And as I stated above,I've heard the stories about State Farm.
I used to pay over $ 1300 /yr for one bike back when I was young and full of piss. And covered by a different company.

The cost (usually)goes down as you age.

The last claim I had on a motorcycle was in 1980 when my 1974 FX Superglide was stolen. I still owed on that bike and was laid off from work. It took 90 days for the insurance to pay up.

The agent told me "That's strange, it should have been settled in 30 days or less."

Nationwide was not "on my side." In spite of their ads.

ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE BASTARDS ! :soapbox:

There once was a TV commercial here in the USA that illustrated that point. It was a group of "agents" with their hands cupped in front of their bodies.

The claim was that "You're in good hands with ..."; looked more like "Pay up Sucker!" to my eyes.

I'll not recount the "joy" of insuring a "Classic" motorcycle (one over 30 years old) except to say that needing an appraisal for stated value coverage and only being covered when riding on a special occasion or parade were a pain. Got around them by having a friendly shop do the quote and I considered any day I rode to be a special occasion. :D

Wow. We start at 1mil here and we are not known for sueing left right and center like the US does. Lol.
ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE BASTARDS ! Pretty much true. My wife works in farm insurance and gets here fair share of these statements. Even from me at times.

sure - i shopped around & geico was the most exensive! they are also cheap is you get the lowest legal required liabilty. if you step up to 100k - 300k, geico is more than progressive, foremost & allstate. at least in my case it was - - i live in the chicago 'burbs - - i had foremost for 12 yrs & they got too expensive, espcially for a 12 yr old v-rod that aint worth squat. i added the bikes to my allstate car policy & my insurance has never been so cheap. don't have the exact price on hand, but i can look in my file when i get home.

Cover Your A$$ !

1 Mil is probably about right in an awful crash Ron. The 10 K you would get in the US with no additional Uninsured Motorist coverage is just a joke. Won't pay enough to get you to the ER and put an IV in your arm. Then just try to sue the Scumbag that hit you with no insurance - good luck, he ain't got nothing so even if you win he's out drinking your judgement away. This is real stuff guys, a couple hundred dollars a year is not insurance. Cover yourself with the Uninsured Motorist Protection ( and Liability ) of at least 100/300K. Just having and paying for it hopefully means you will never need or use it ! If you don't have it that's when you need it, so just get it, pay for it, and if you're not riding your bike cancel and park it the six months during winter or summer when you don't ride it will pay for the better insurance when you do. And homeowners will pay for your bike if your house burns down while its not on bike insurance. Best coverage, lowest price. :D

There was a day when you could insure for the 6 month riding season here, but as time went on 30+ years) the riding season is actually closer to 7-8 depending on the year now, climate change and all that. Most companies are full year coverage now in my parts. The thing about personal injury to someone else is where law suits start at 1 mil or more. Property damage is cheap in comparison. Damn lawyers and insurance companies hose us in the end with high premiums.

We have ended up sticking with Geico through the years, rates haven't crept up on us more than any others. We have shopped around and have yet to really find anyone that has beat Geico, haven't had a need for them in a long while but no issues the last time we did. I hear USAA is good if you are a vet.
