Help, broken pinch bolt upper tt

Hey, I broke the pinch bolt off in the upper triple tree (fork clamp?) when loosening it to relocate my blinkers. I tried drilling a hole in the broken piece to relieve pressure and wound up with a hollowed out bolt that is still stuck and paper thin on one side. Should I try an ez out? Or tap and die? I don't have either of these tools, so I'll have to buy them. What do you think?

go with the EZ out first. If you have drilled it to a point the bolt is wafer thing then it should come out with no problem.

I'll differ here with experience behind me. You can go too big.
If the wall is too thin it will deform and expand. You'll not get it out.

EZ-out is almost a mis-nomer. If you go in small and the thing comes out then it's a great success. Just remember that if you break and EZ-out in the screw it becomes an exponentially bigger and more difficult job. You'll need a die grinder and carbide burr to get a busted EZ out removed.

First use an awl or sharp pointed pick and see if the remaining screw will wiggle or move. If so half your battle is won. GO in with the smallest EZ out you can get away with and it should come out but don't use too much force.

If not check out MSC.com, and look for "left handed drills". Some times if you can use one with a bit of force they'll grab and unscrew the remaining screw end. Even a smaller sized left handed tap will work as well. Something between half and 3/4 the original screw size is best.

If you have doubt you can always drill out to the Heli-Coil size and install a thread insert. Which may be the end result anyway.

If you have a machineshop nearby, this works: get a bolt the same size. Have them drill a hole in it. Thread it in, and have them use a wire feed welder to weld the broken one to the new one. Unbolt. Maybe 10 bucks. Joe

Thanks for the advice. I have very little of the original bolt left on one side. The problem that caused it to break in the first place, is that this bolt was included in a relo kit and I believe it has some red lock-tite on it. I'll try the safest method first and work up to drilling it out an using an insert last. Probably save myself some aggravation if I just buy a new brace? Have no idea what one costs? I know I am ready to get this baby back on the road a.s.a.p.

If it is the red loctite heat it up with a heat gun. This should loosen the loctite enough to unscrew it.

Purchasing a new Triple Tree is the last resort. If all else fails, assuming the original hole is not compromised, I would get a Helio coil of the proper size and re-thread the messed up hole. It will be better than new.

Finally had time to fix my pinchbolt. Had to buy a metric tap (size 10x1.5). After running the tap through there, it worked out fine. As soon as my new tires are in and mounted, I'll be roddin'!
