sounds like a dumb question but do you do it with the bike on the side stand?? or with the bike stright up??? and do you rest the dip stick on the top?? or do you threaded it back in?? thank you for any help

Thread the dipstick back in, with the bike up straight off the stand.

Oil should be warm when checking level. Just make sure the oil has had time to return to the pan.

I hate to change the subject or steal a thread, but is the procedure that same for the Muscle being as the dip-stick is on the right side of the engine/clutch cover housing?

I'm asking since I do not have one, and I would not want Muscle owners to be confused with the correct guidance noted above for most bikes.

On both my 03 and 07 I simply sit on the bike then reach down and unscrew the dipstick with my left hand. Clean it off with a paper towel in my right hand and reinsert it, screwing it down all the way then remove it once more and check the level.
Engine should be at operating temperature when checking so wear a glove on that left hand.

Make a mark on the dipstick for full when on the side stand. Then you can check it when needed without trying to balance the bike with the other hand. Some of us are short and fat and can't reach the dam stick when sitting on the beast. :D
