I got a big flash of shift light in 5th that spooked me into letting off of it, it's set at 8400 so I probably let go around 8600. I honestly think the bike will rev out in 5th. I pussied out so I can't prove it though. I vaguely remember seeing it over 130 in the process but my head was jarring around too much to pay attention to the speedo or the tach. These bikes make for a very stressfull ride at speeds like that. I might try it again someday, but I'm not in a hurry.
i'm glad it's not just me i've seen 130 to 135 on my 06 D and the turbulance is pretty violent compared to sportbikes. i ain't seen no rev-limiter and anyay theres no place around here straight enough but maxton is coming and i'll tell you what a bone stock 06 D will do with 150lb rider.

Of course, the earlier bikes have the 30 tooth sprocket, and red line/limiter is above 140. Never been there (yet). Probably can't with all the crap on the bike. But its nice knowing we have the reserve.

Well my little bone stock 02 has seen 152 on the v-gauge. I did it pulling onto a highway off a long overpass so I started out really going up hill until about 120 and then crested the hill and down the other side I saw the 152 mph. Of course it was done in less then a 1/4 mile starting out at 60mph. My redline is set at 9500 and my fuel shut off right at 152 on the v-gauge. I didn't have gps on the bike that day but have had my gps on the bike several times over 100mph and my v-gauge is usually within 1mph of actual speed.

Sneakin' out into eastern Oregon's high desert is one of my favorite things to do with a sunny day... There are stretches of road which are perfect to let the bike have it's way, and I've had my 04 vrsca up to 130 running down those long straight stretches... In a straight line run there were two motorcycles that really turned me on I've owned, the V-Rod being the most exciting followed by the Honda CBX that I originally rode when discovering the long smooth stretches around Tye Valley and Bend... I've never seen the rev limiter in 5th, but I am sure I was very close...

 You have much bigger stones than me my friend. I backed it off after 115.............but it got up there mighty quick!

Now if someone could only find the bottom end...:hidesbeh:

Just an FYI, the rev limiter on stock bikes is set around 8900 for the 1130 engines and 9100 for the SE versions. With the Race Tuner you can set it up to 10,000 if you want.

The max speed on a stock bike with a 28 tooth is about 137 when you hit the rev limiter and 147 for the 30 tooth versions.

I knew that about the limiter, I had to set my light at 8400 because it hits it so fast in 1st, any higher than that and I'm at the limiter before I have time to shift. I have the 1250 and if I had to speculate I would guess it would be in the 145 range by 9100, someday I'll find out for sure.

So Mike is it safe to set it to 10,000 on my SE and do you know what top end would that give me with the stock 28 tooth sprocket? I do not go there much but I would like not to be passed if it is a simple matter of using the race tuner I already have to change that. My bike is stock other than the SE pipes, race tuner, high flow filter and topless.

This is nice.I get along side of some of the guys that work at the Honda,Kowy,Zook shop on the way to work sometimes and when the traffic is clear we wind um up.Of course I just don't have enough to do anything w these guys past 130 even though I can bury the speedos on both V-Rods.

What get's me is some of you guys on your V-Rods claim you hit the rev limiter in high gear.I have held my 03 WOT for a mile or more and never hit the rev limiter in 5th gear, with the 180,200 and 240 tire, more than 50 times each.I've held it WOT to 143 on a dyno and never hit the limiter.I put 150 on the 07 1250 speedo and it has never hit the limiter either.
On the 03 the tack is just tickling 9 grand and the 07 reads just over.

How are you guys hitting the limiter in high gear and what does it feel like when inertia takes over?

Just get a turbo and you'll slam into the rev limiter real hard in 5th. Makes you wish you had six (or seven).

Setting your limiter to 10,000 is always taking a chance. I have heard of some guys doing it with success. You might want to ease into it. I do know that 9500 is pretty safe but the stock motor is running out of HP and torque at those rpm's unless you have bigger cams and throttle bodies installed. These motors are real strong on the bottom ends with forged cranks, forged pistons and really strong well made rods so the bottom end will hold together, it us just a question of the valve train holding up when start pushing the envelope.

And really bad shit happens at 10krpm when it comes apart. The kaboom effect is tremendous.

Valve heads bouncing around in the cylinders like Pac-Man.

speed

i hit 140 mph one time, for about 2 miles . as i was coming home from rock store at interstate 110, i was going 70 mph on the carpool lane ,when suddenly two rice rockets went by . i look at my mirror and there some more coming so i swing to my right to let them past, but instead of passing to the left some body blew a horn . and pass me left and right there is 8 of them no respect ,, they are doing about 100 mph. pissed me off so i decided to follow them, as soon as i got a chance i pass them all . doing 120 mph , then i said to myself i will max out before they can go around me 130 they still behind so i hit 140 , no more behind me , so i slow down and read the sign i end up on I 105 east, so i took the next exit 710 south to go home , then i heard a a rice rockets blowing their horns and giving a thumps up . so i :D yeald back at them its a V- rod . so you guys that go to the rock store,, and heard this story, you can tell them its me the guy that wearing half faced helmet with a windvest windshield,,, angel

I have to eat my own words,I hit the limiter in 5th at 142 on the X.
I learned that the limiter will only cut out the rear cylinder in certain situations.Mine did this because I didn't get the "flying through the windshield effect"

Howdy Partner,

I have had the same experience as you until this year going east on I-495 to Amesbury I was taking one of my 1st rides with the iPOD and had two challenges in less than 20 miles. I hit the rev limit three times. I thought something was broken. The next week I was going east on I-490 messing with a sport bike and held it WOT for much longer and never hit the limit. Must be down hill with a trail wind to hit it.
:them: 225 km/h no rev limiter in sight... But I felt it had more, I did not... The half helmet was about to rip my head off.
