These nuts must be rechecked for correct torque after warm-up during installation.
Feel free to check "the fall-away" while in mode. And condition of the Dot4 fluid. An original HD shop manual is nice to have.

Thanks Knut! I’ve got the manuals (service and electrical) on order, I downloaded the parts manual from HD as well. I’ve got a maintenance list to start working through while I wait for parts; fall away & fluid flush are both on there. Both seals need replacing (clutch master and front brake master), the covers as well have a lot of what appears to be brake fluid corrosion from spillage where the powder coat is lifting. In fact the whole clutch master assembly is corroded from brake fluid spillage. I’ll most likely have to source a replacement. I toyed with the idea of swapping both out for Brembo RCS kits, but then I’ll loose the mirrors and turn signals (mounting points I mean). Alternatively I could just check into getting the clutch master re powder coated if I can’t find a replacement. Right now, they work, but just don’t look pretty 🤣

Appears to be factory headlight? If so, remove it also and replace with aftermarket headlight if you plan on night driving. Vintage Parts in beaver Dam Wi. has NOS VRSC parts at good prices. They have a website and also list on Ebay (if listing says make an offer, make an offer)................. Thank you for removing those pipes, they don't do our R's justice............
If you need parts and don't know the part number head to Ronnies website to find the numbers. Ronnie''s Harley-Davidson''s 2006 Harley Davidson
Hi Frogman, yup it’s stock, replacing that headlight with led is definitely on my list, just lower down on it. Those pipes and pegs just had to go first 🤣 thanks for the suggestions and the links!

Looking at the pic of your bike in your signature, that looks like the Corbin seat, did you go with the standard or “close” seat option?

Have a great day!!

It's a Corbin standard seat, some say it's hard but mine identifies as firm. I bought a sundowner off ebay and have it installed now (can't say I'm happy with it, will probably go back to Corbin).
Clutch and brake master cyl are still available through HD as they fit other models. Had to replace mine after a slide..........

Hello All!

Yesterday, I picked up a 2006 VRSCR. It was a great opportunity and Ive wanted a V-Rod for a very long time! Been riding since 2008, mostly road air cooled Ducati’s, but I have fallen into love with the muscle bikes when I had a Diavel Strata, followed by an X-Diavel S, later a Rocket 3 GT, and now I am riding a Scout 101. My wife is a retired marine, she rode with me twice, and said “Nope, I want my own bike!”, so carrying a passenger has never been a concern for me. Two weeks ago, I saw this opportunity to grab a hard to find VRSCR, just couldn’t pass it up, yesterday I finally made the drive, and picked her up!

Forgot to mention, I had a 2004 Dyna Defender back in the day (FXDP). My riding buddy was a moto officer, and it was his work bike. I enjoyed it, but it was just too heavy for my tastes, so I sold it back in 2014.

She needs some cosmetic TLC, basic spit and polish, wrong exhaust, get rid of the windscreen, put the front turn signals back where they should be, etc… She’s a one owner bike, with 28K miles and full maintenance history from the local dealer.

Been lurking on the forum for a while, learning and doing research. Glad to finally join the family officially! Have a great weekend all!

Nice ride I just recently picked up a 2008 needs love but it’s my first early childhood dream come true. I love it. I can’t stay long enough to give it to love it needs. I’m on it all the time.

Nice bike, you are taking off parts I took years to put on. Yes that is the Detachable Touring Windshield 57229-06 and the Windshield Docking Hardware Kit made for the R. The handle bars have also been changed and longer clutch and brake lines I would guess. Only after market seat made is Corbin. Other option would be the stock seat it is narrower and sets a little farther back, modify the stock seat. I would sugest not to mod the Sundowner because of it's raritity. I made my own seat pan and seat from fiberglass a foam exercise mat and marine vinyl. It would be faster and easier to work 2 days OT and buy the corbin.

Just some of my opinons and experience it's your bike mod it the way you want and is comfortable for you ridding. If you choose to sell any of the parts such as saddle bag brackets, whindshield, seats, sissy bar, fender base plate they are rare and only fit the R model. You will have a limited market but they should bring top dollar.

Hi SummerJim, thank you for your observations… I had been wondering about the bars, they didn’t seem correct, and had way too much pull back, but it’s so hard to compare to old reference photos. In fact, I was trying to figure out if the “stock” throttle cables were actually stainless steel braided or not (this bike has stainless steel braided which seemed odd to me). Since I have no formal receipts or paperwork, it’s hard to tell what exactly has been done. I was able to confirm the last five years of maintenance records with the dealership, but their computer system was having issues and would only show records since 2020 the day I talked with them. That’s my really long winded way of saying, the bike is a series of mysteries and I’m slowly learning each one 😁

As far as the factory accessories go, I’m being very methodical in removing and inventorying each item. The windscreen simply doesn’t fit my riding style, I like naked bikes. I know better than to toss anything, and will simply store them for the foreseeable future. To be honest, I had no idea how many factory accessories the bike actually had at the time I bought it. I even asked about the seat, and was simply told it was “stock”. I know better now, and would obviously not mod it. One of the reasons for joining this forum was to solicit insights and learn from others, so I value your feedback; thanks again, and have a great day!

It took me 30 man hours to get a VRSCA muffler mount bracket, modify it to fit on the R Model, and fab up an attachment for my Bub 7 2-1 exhaust, to clear the foot peg and mount it up. Another 30 manhours to find the BMW M3 resonator, find the proper stainless conical adapter, have it fit, welded up and then drill & install it.
No easy task getting an aftermarket pipe to fit an R Model.
Like Knut and I both said your best bet is to buy a stock set of header pipes and aux volume chamber ( R specific exhaust has larger head pipes than other early V Rod systems, but they may fit the R as well - their smaller head pipes give more low end torque, vs R exhaust which is more high Rpm Hp ) Buy the R system to be sure it fits, then install stock, hollow point or aftermarket mufflers. Best of luck with your R you'll really enjoy it just remember it's fast and not a true sport bike so she can get you in trouble, I call it " Dancing with the Fat Lady " which means don't throw her weight around too much or you'll end up on the dance floor, with her on top. Manage momentum and speed within her limits and you'll enjoy dancing with her - (y)
Thanks for the feedback! I sourced some used R header pipes and an aux volume chamber this weekend. The chrome covers are a bit scratched, but so long as the pipes fit correctly, I figure I can watch for nicer chrome guards. Goal right now is to get an exhaust on so I can ride her, and the factory route just seemed like the best way to go. I still need to source some mufflers, so that will be my next research item 👍

Thanks for the details on your seat. I’ve had quite a few Corbin’s, and really like them. They aren’t for everyone, but once you break them in, they are great. Since it turns out I got the sundowner seat with the bike, I will not be looking into a seat until my current one gets a good shakedown to see how I like it 👍

as far as the clutch master goes, I would like to stay with original if possible, but I am getting better at using the HD site to identify the current part number at least!

The clutch master should be available, but can be difficult to source directly - I learned here that they are the same as some other H-D Models, the new one I bought a few years ago had the OEM clutch lever on it so newer bikes may have a black clutch lever and a different part number but will be interchangeable, you can match them up at a H-D dealer if you take yours in and you find a parts guys willing to do so - check Ebay, etc. by part number, description daily, one will pop up.
Also my friend had the FZR1000 too but it was like a 1988 - the fact that you have a 1898 is amazing, that's 90 years older than his ! I mean that's even before H-D & Indian sold their first bikes ! Japs were way way way ahead of their time !:ROFLMAO: (y)

Good catch! Year corrected 🤣

Sorry, couldn't resist having a laugh on that one, very low hanging fruit and we're easily amused here -

BTW - not sure how much racket you like from your exhaust but the stock mufflers are pretty quiet, the optional hollow points a bit more, hard to find Kerkers a bit more, then TAB baffled, then Supertrapps which can be fairly loud with an open end cap and lots of discs but adjustable with fewer discs for backpressure and sound level, you probably know this.

Clean used mufflers are always an option and can save big bucks - example - the Supertrapp Fat Shots with extra discs and an open end cap can easily be $ 700+ new but are a great option if you want to get your exhaust note just right. If I had to do it again with a stock set of headers and aux chamber like you have now I would probably say they would be my #1 choice, plus very light, tunable.
Anyway - Best of luck with the Bike ! (y)

Thanks StreetRodRacer!

Currently I have Tab’s on my Indian, and even with their “quiet” baffle, it’s crazy loud. I like hearing the bikes, but I also dont want to be obnoxious. I previously had a Rocket 3 GT and went with a Competition Werks slip on that was effectively a straight pipe (the baffle did nothing) and that was ear bleedingly loud! Ive had Termi’s, Arrows, and Akra’s in the past on my Duc’s so I have a soft spot for them, but knowing I dont really have a good access to fabrication services, I would rather find something i can just slip onto the stock headers and aux chamber (hence why I grabbed those pieces this past weekend since they were available). A full stock system is usually just too quiet for my tastes. The stock Indian sounded like a honda, and now it sounds like a lumpy hot rod haha!

Honestly, my main goal is to get her on the road and start riding, i might end up picking up a set of Tabs for the season, and then watch for a set of supertrapps. A really dumb question for ya… About the supertrapps, are they simply Fat Shots slip ons, or is there a specific model/size to watch for? I havent found much details on what I should be looking for basically haha!

UPDATE: I think i found it… should I be watching for SuperTrapp Part # 828-71134 ?

Thanks!

Soo who rides the Rod and who the Scout.......sure the retired Marine has choice
Hi Sherwood,

I didn’t list it, but her bike is actually a 2018 Ducati Scrambler 800. She started riding 10 yrs ago on an 883 SuperLow, but hated the weight. Once she took a spin on the Duc, she literally never rode the SuperLow again. She flat out said “I’m not riding the Harley home!” and we traded iit for her Duc that same day. I should mention, I’m under express orders to not modify her bike in any way, but she did allow me to install a Termi Slip-On, cause “it just sounds right”. Oh and I forgot to mention, one reason she likes the Duc is, it’s easy to wheelie whenever she wants to 🤣

I recently received the Yamahas from a dear friend who passed, and since I brought them home, she keeps asking “When the 1000 will be back on the road? I call dibs!” 🤣

…but you are correct, she gets to ride whatever she wants 😜

Her Bike

The 1000, I’m currently rebuilding the carbs with the goal of having it running before the end of summer, then I’ll spend the winter going through it systematically from one end to the other. It’s all original, 13k miles, and I even have the original plastics stored safely till they are ready to go back on.

I was looking at both the FTR and Scout 101 identical to the one pictured above, almost bought the scout. But up pops a 2019 FXDRS for $11 k, so I bought that. Scout's a nice looking ride though........... maybe next year
I had a short list I was interested in back in Jan 2024. i rode the Sport Chief, The Scout, and the Rocket 3 GT (I know, strange list!). Sport chief reminded me too much of my old Dyna, not a bad thing, more of a “been there, done that” feeling. ‘24 scout was underwhelming for the price, and I found a killer deal on a leftover’23 Rocket… about 2 mths after I bought the Rocket, the ‘25 scout 101 was announced and I kicked myself. Rode the Rocket for the season. It was stupid fun, but if I kept it, I’d loose my license! My speed was complete deceiving on that bike. I’d be cruising at 60ish on a country road, only to realize I was doing 95!! In the end, I traded it off for the 101, and have been happy ever since.

I’ve always wanted an FTR, and was tempted, but the 101 won out. The 101 only had two issues I didn’t like, the bars were a joke, but an easy fix by swapping for a 2025 bobber bar, and the brake master was the generic Indian part, not a nice Brembo unit to match the brakes. Again, easy to fix by swapping for an RCS19.

‘and yeah, I’m a sucker for a good deal! Sounds like you did well with the FXDRS 👍

I don't know about Scout, but FTR is 120hp and lighter

FTR gearing, 3rd is a little higher than 1130 2nd, 3rd on FTR is lotsa fun but not as much as 2nd on NRod.......but FTR will blow it away in the curves
The scout is fun for a hooligan-cruiser bike. Loves to rev, makes a great sound once you get rid of that stock pipe, brakes are fantastic if you swap for a better master cylinder, the suspension is actually good with quite a bit of adjustment, and it tips into a corner without thinking (but you will scrape quickly if you get too aggressive lol).

I could definitely do weekend trips on the scout, maybe a week, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a cross country trip. The biggest downside is, if you’re much over 6 ft, it’s going to feel too small. I’m 5’11” and I wish I could move the pegs forward 1-2 inches. Second biggest downside is the tank, 3.$ gallons, and if your having fun & playing in the power band, you will struggle to get 110 miles to a tank 🤣
