Has anyone actually measured the EGT in the exhaust stream within 2” of the port, pre and post pipe and K&N topless a/f modification? Or is it a scare tactic to make everyone lose their minds for simply putting pipes and a high flow a/f?

My V is an 03 without 02’s. V&H 2 into 1, K&N topless and no tune. There are a ton of posts on needing a tuner for these mods. The bike runs great. No hesitation, snappy throttle, and tons of pull up to redline.

Anyone with stock broad range 02 sensors will compensate for minor upgrades such as pipes and a/f. So what’s up with that?

No two bikes seem to be the same. Your open loop factory tune could very well be in good range. The engine will let you know if it isn't. EGT probes are generally not part of the program unless you have an aircraft or developing factory tunes. Stock O2 sensors since 2008 are narrow band used to trim the fuel under 5-6k rpms. The range to compensate is limited. They try to target the clb table in the calibration which is basically the AFR within the limit of the clb tables. Even though it will target it to some degree, this AFR might not be engine friendly with certain intake and exhaust mods so one needs to alter the clb table and change the AFR that the engine likes. This is where some form of flash tuner is needed to change that if you have O2 sensors or use a piggy back injector pulse modifier like a PC or others commonly used on bikes with no O2 sensors.

Ron-
I’m glad to hear that some VR’s don’t require a tuner after pipes and minor air intake mods. It’s first time anyone has mentioned it. Thank you responding with a clear explanation.

In around 02 there was an update where the IAT was relocated and a dealer flash was done to stop poor hot start and idling issues. This flash was actually on the rich side of things rather then the common complaint of them being lean. A few years ago I ran across an 03 where the guy was bitching about sooty non stock exhaust and not so great gas mileage. He was able to pull the calibration number and it was that 02 reflash. I forgot the calibration number. Some referred to it as a stage 1 tune. You might have this tune in your bike, so with the mods it' averages out decent.
