What does a good motorcycle helmet need to do to protect the rider’s head in case of an accident? For starters, it needs to sit snugly on the head and be secured by a fail-safe retention system preventing it from flying off. Also, a good helmet needs to disperse and absorb the energy of an impact to prevent severe damage to the rider’s head. For the most part, helmet safety largely depends on the quality of materials used in its construction.

Since most of the inner padding and Styrofoam liners feature largely similar properties, we will be discussing hard outer shells and materials they are made of. Simpler, more affordable helmets feature thermoplastic-based shells made with the use of ABS plastics, polycarbonate, Lexan, of the mixture of these materials.
