I want to change from my 03 vrod 30 tooth front pulley to a 28 tooth front pulley #40014-04K. will it fit the same flange or do I have to buy another HD part? And how much do you think that new flange will cost? thanks for your help curley

I replaced my 30 tooth to a 28 tooth and had no problems, I did replace the belt for the recommended shorter version but I think a lot of others didn't and reused the stock 30 tooth belt. No problems, used a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the old 30 tooth pulley. Good luck

Your '03 flange won't work with a 40345-04, 28T front sprocket.

You'll also need the following parts (first cost is MSRP, the other is with 20% discount):
7910M, flange collar nut ($9.00/$7.20) 160 Nm (118 ft•lbs)
11354K, rubber seal spacer ($1.85/$1.48)
34007-01K, plastic cap ($1.65/$1.32)
35423-04K, output flange (for late pulleys) ($46.75/$37.40)
35451-01K, flange nut locking plate ($2.30/$1.84)
40118-05, 149T rear drive belt ($233.00/$186.40)
40399-01M, sprocket screws (X3) ($1.50/$1.20) 88 to 102 Nm (65 to 75 ft•lbs)

... I think a lot of others didn't and reused the stock 30 tooth belt. ...
Belt for 30T front sprocket is 150T. The 28T sprocket uses a 149T belt. Most adjustment cams bottom out using the 150T belt on a 28T sprocket.

... used a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the old 30 tooth pulley. ...
The front sprocket comes off with three bolts. It's the flange that's removed with a puller.

I thought that 3 bolts held the pulley on to the flange? You needed a pulley remover also? I,m confused. but thanks for your information..... curley:banghead:

rsc has a great video showing that the 2 different pulleys can be swapped out with the same flange, now I'm really confused. Is it because HD#40014-04K is the wrong part to match the 03 flange?

About a tenth of a second difference between the 2 sprockets.
unless you hack things up,all you need is a pulley, flange and a belt.

Once you get the flange you can get the Euro 30T pulley if you ever want to go back and forth. I always heard it made a 1/2 second difference in the 0 to 60 mph times and made it easier to pull off, 1st gear is pretty high. :)

I have the 28 Tooth kit on the bike.

With this kit I had to change the flange as stated in the video.

This will allow you to change between the 28 Tooth and 30 Tooth HDI pulley.

There are tits on the inside of the pulley that makes it a tight fit on the flange.

The domestic 30 Tooth pulley can fit over the flange for the 28 Tooth pulley. This is not a good thing as it will cause undue stress on the output shaft because it is not centered correctly.

Don't ask how I know this.

If you want to go to a 28 and and be able to change at will...buy a 28 T kit and a 30 T HDI pulley.

Hope this clears it up!

Has any one made a Video of how to change the Flange and what to look out for?
No I have not. It is not hard, just follow the manual.

I guess I will have to add it to the list of videos to be made.

If you order a 30 T HDI pulley, Have the local dealer do a part search and get it that way.

If you order from the dealer and get it from the warehouse it will be wrong. HD has put the 30T domestic in the 30 T HDI boxes. They messed up the parts and boxes big time.
