Just my opimion guys but I have a pair of the Panoptix with day/night lenses and like them very much except for one very major problem you can not get the inside of the lenses clean they almost feel sticky and evry partical of dust and dirt seem to end up sticking to the inside. Gene can you give me any ideas on cleaning them without damage. I guess if I do damage them I can always buy a pair of Wiley's from you!
Thanks
Kev

I have a pair of the Wiley-X that I got from Dr Gene and they are great. They came with two (dark and clear) sets of lenses and are some of the best glasses I have seen for keeping the wind out.

Kev,
Believe it or not, Panoptx does not recommend cleaning the inside of the lenses!!?? They told me that it smears the anti-fog coating to touch it. They will replace the lenses for you if you send them in, however. That is one reason I favor the Wiley-X lately -- and their quality is up to the point that even I can't complain -- and I am rather particular about optics and frame quality. :thumb:

Kev, I ruined my inner lenses on my panoptyx trying to clean them. The inner lens even came unglued. Panoptyx fixed it, no problem.
Val,
Thanks thats good to know how did you go about getting them fixed? The only problem is you can't keep glasses how do you not clean the inside of the lens just seem like a bad design.
Thanks Again

Kev, I called Gene and asked him what to do and he told me to send them back to panoptyx and gave me the address of where to send them, plus a copy of my receipt, since I had, of course, lost it by the time this happened.

They send along a little cloth with the glasses that they want you to use to clean them. What happened to mine was that they got absolutely drenched in a thunderstorm and I used my bandana to try to dry them, instead of their little cloth. They didn't give me any grief about it, but I will stick to using their cloth if it happens again.

Your right Val, the Panoptx come in a pouch that serves as a case and a cleaning cloth. The lenses are laminated, with several layers: polarized, tint, and other layers and they de-laminate when subjected to a lot of water and rubbing. Wiley-X and Costa Del Mar are high quality laminted lenses - but I have never heard of a problem with them. And, honestly, most people don't have a problem with Panoptx -- just those folks that ride at warp-speed like Val. Just kidding, Val. :hiding:

Gene,

I've got the X-1's but I'm looking for new Wileys with the removable foam. I tried the JP-4's but they don't fit my head. I'm wondering if the XL-3's are close to the X-1's in fit (hard to tell from their dimension on their page) or would the XL-4's be better? I'm also wondering about the different lenses. Are the Filter 3 lenses really light enough for night time riding, are they dark enough for the bright Florida sunshine and last but not least, do the LA lenses get dark enough for the bright Florida sun?

So many questions, so little time ;)

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
You need to try on the glasses before you order. I don't wear the Filter 3 lenses at night; however, they may be light enough for you -- I can't say for sure. They are dark enough for the bright GEORGIA sun.
To answer all questions you just need to locate some and check.
How is that for not really answering the questions. Maybe I should go into politics... :hmm:

Dave,
What frame style did you get - I bet I could have saved you a lot of $$. :spank:

Gene,

I'd love to try them on before I buy them but the dealers down here don't stock much of any selection.

Whatever I do they will have the removeable foam and LA lenses. I'm tired of sweating around the eye sockets when I get off the bike and swaping lenses has become a pain.

It looks like the XL-3's are my best option. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a dealer that stocks some for sizing before I order them from you ;)

Mark,
The XL-3 would probably be the best to go with -- the XL-4 is slightly smaller. I wear the XL-4 and if I remember right, when we were at the Forum dinner in Daytona, you are a bigger fellow than me...so go with the bigger one.

As a Follow-up. I ordered a set of XL-3LA's from Dr. Gene and of course the price and service was top notch (this is the 3rd pair my family has gotten from the good Dr.)

As a note, I got the LA or Light Adjusting lens. It seems these need to be activated to get them to darken. Of course they don't tell you that in the package. In two separate calls to Wiley I got 2 different methods to activate them :hmm:

After trying both methods they still wouldn't darken so I have sent them back to Wiley-X for replacement. No questions asked, no receipt required, just send them back with a note and $5 to cover shipping and they will send you a new pair. :thumb:

Of course I'm never satisfied that I've gotten the correct answer from whoever may have decided to pick up the phone so I did a little research. It turns out that the Photochromatic elements that darken the lens actually work better the colder they are. I then did a search and found a supplier that has documented the activation procedure based on replies from Wiley's engineering people. Here's what you are supposed to do to activate the LA lens.

About Light Adjusting Lenses
Light adjusting lenses require activation, particularly in very hot weather. After receiving, place them in the freezer or refrigerator for a couple of hours, then remove and place in the direct sunlight. They will darken and continue darken further when exposed to sunlight repeatedly during normal use. Repeat cooling process if necessary two or three times. Once activated cooling process is no longer necessary. In normal temperatures, below 80 degrees, simply place in direct sunlight for several hours to activate.
