Gene,

Between the JP2 LA and the XL3 LA which one seems the have the best coverage? My current XL1's still let a little too much air through.

I also notice the JP4 LA is specifically for smaller faces. Do you have specs on the sizing (standard optical specs are OK, the wife knows how to convert them)

Damn you, I need another pair of glasses like I need a hole in the head ;)

Conan,

I'll assume you don't know the history of our crowd and think that Gene is SPAMing the Forums. You couldn't be farther from the truth. Gene is a V-Rod owner who happens to be an optometrist. He offers Panoptx and Wiley-X riding glasses to the members of the forum at a significant discount, far less than you will find ANYWHERE else. So much so that Panoptx threatened to pull his dealership if he didn't stop. (scared some of the Stealerships who, BTW buy them at a lower price than Gene).

Gene isn't doing this to make a buck (sure he'll make s few per sale but not much) he's doing this because he wants to offer people he shares a hobby with a break.

As for the criticisms of the Panoptx, that's public knowledge. The 2 major complaints are the foam causes some people to sweat more and they are known to break at the nose piece if too much pressure is applied. Search the forums, this and others, it's public knowledge.

Nothing he said was meant to criticize what you wear, he's just offering up information so we all know what's available as new things come on the market. (oh yea, and offering them to members of this forum at a really good price)

Gene,

I've got the X-1's but I'm looking for new Wileys with the removable foam. I tried the JP-4's but they don't fit my head. I'm wondering if the XL-3's are close to the X-1's in fit (hard to tell from their dimension on their page) or would the XL-4's be better? I'm also wondering about the different lenses. Are the Filter 3 lenses really light enough for night time riding, are they dark enough for the bright Florida sunshine and last but not least, do the LA lenses get dark enough for the bright Florida sun?

So many questions, so little time ;)

Thanks,
Mark

Gene,

I'd love to try them on before I buy them but the dealers down here don't stock much of any selection.

Whatever I do they will have the removeable foam and LA lenses. I'm tired of sweating around the eye sockets when I get off the bike and swaping lenses has become a pain.

It looks like the XL-3's are my best option. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a dealer that stocks some for sizing before I order them from you ;)

As a Follow-up. I ordered a set of XL-3LA's from Dr. Gene and of course the price and service was top notch (this is the 3rd pair my family has gotten from the good Dr.)

As a note, I got the LA or Light Adjusting lens. It seems these need to be activated to get them to darken. Of course they don't tell you that in the package. In two separate calls to Wiley I got 2 different methods to activate them :hmm:

After trying both methods they still wouldn't darken so I have sent them back to Wiley-X for replacement. No questions asked, no receipt required, just send them back with a note and $5 to cover shipping and they will send you a new pair. :thumb:

Of course I'm never satisfied that I've gotten the correct answer from whoever may have decided to pick up the phone so I did a little research. It turns out that the Photochromatic elements that darken the lens actually work better the colder they are. I then did a search and found a supplier that has documented the activation procedure based on replies from Wiley's engineering people. Here's what you are supposed to do to activate the LA lens.

About Light Adjusting Lenses
Light adjusting lenses require activation, particularly in very hot weather. After receiving, place them in the freezer or refrigerator for a couple of hours, then remove and place in the direct sunlight. They will darken and continue darken further when exposed to sunlight repeatedly during normal use. Repeat cooling process if necessary two or three times. Once activated cooling process is no longer necessary. In normal temperatures, below 80 degrees, simply place in direct sunlight for several hours to activate.
