What are the choices? Progressive 412, 418 and 440; Smooth Ride Shocks; Ohlins TYPE 36K; Legend Air and now Penske.

I'm thinking of replacing mine, which are the best? I'm around 190 lbs. and ride solo 99% of the time. Any advice is appreciated.

Cut OEM from the skullman... Best bang for the buck.

Are you having problems with the stock shocks? Just curious is all.

I ran Progressive 440's on my Sportster, and they are pretty amazing shock system. I am 210 lbs, and the Sportster holds the road in the toughest conditions, and when 2 up, no complaint.

The V-Rod shocks seem to work really well for me, but, I am not sure how long these will hold up.

Anyone had to replace their OEM due to failure as yet?

Rich: I'm not having any problems with the stock, I just want to replace anything that can be replaced with something cooler. :D After all you have to spend your money on something.

Kaz: stop with the struts already, the rest of us actually ride, not race! ;)

Frank Storms has the legend air shocks, check them out in the gallery.

Another option is to have your stock shocks cut 1". Lowers the rear end nicely and the stock shocks look a lot better than some of the after market options.

I couldn't ride 2-up with the stock shocks. I'm 260 and my wife is about 170. That's a lot of beef going over RR tracks.
Switched to Progressive 440's. V-Mod provided them with chromed top and bottom instead of polished. ChefJason (I think his handle is vrsc "ironbutt") hooked me up with some custom-made upper shock-bolt covers. Very cool items.
Shocks are great.
Rides great single and really great two-up. I don't even slow down for RR tracks anymore (and I used to slow to about 20 MPH).
It seems steadier in the swoops, too.
Dramatic improvement for me, and I think they look good, too.

I bought Skullmans shocks, they lower your bike 1 5/8" Really
changes the look of your bike, they Ride better than Stock and only
cost 199.00 A Whole lot cheaper than others out there.

Take a look at my Pic.

does he make a stock length shock? I want an improvement in ride quality, but ride 2-up most of the time, so decreased suspension travel is probably not a good thing.

I seen an add in a mag from that skullman and it says that dyna shocks fit (at least the way I read it)
Is this true ?
If so I had so many chances for chrome shocks this past winter that I turned down (because of ignorance I guess) .
I looked for a set of V-Rod shocks to send him to get shortened , but had no luck. I did not want to spend 60 bucks for a damaged set from the forum. I heard from quite a few people that they do good work. All word of mouth though . I never seen any or saw how they may rust from being welded (I do not know if it happens to them- I only know that weld = rust in the future).

Progressive 440 shocks are available in factory length of 13"
but are also available in a 12" length. Chopper Steve asked me when I ordered mine which I wanted. I ride 2-up so I bought the 13".
