Stock.
Everyone talks about horsepower gains from pipes and a tune, then they attribute the gain to the pipe. Everything I've ever seen points to the gain coming from the tune.

The only thing I've ever seen that could be considered a semi-valid test were a few people here that were at a dyno shootout. Two or three posted, and they said the bikes with stock pipes made the most horsepower.

With that said, the 2 into 2 pipes kill horsepower. Beyond that, buy whatever you like.

The reality is that there isn't much you can do to get more out of a V-Rod. A good tune helps a lot, beyond that, cams will get you another 10 to 15 ponys. If you want big horsepower you need to go big bore or forced induction.

What cams, what do they cost, what do they do to the gas mileage .. and how do they sound?
Screaming eagle cams from Harley. I don't know much about them, though several people here run them. The high performance section would be the place to start looking for info.

I have the double barrel slip ons, they came with the bike, they definitely sound throaty but I like the looks of the 2 -1.

I have the Vance n Hines Competition Series on my 02 vrsca and wow what a sweet sound and also a nice gain in horsepower. About 15 hp on dyno. They are so nice. Get em brother. You will like severely.

If you're worried about gas mileage, you better leave the bike stock. Any cams, pipe and tuner you add is going to decrease your mileage anyway because you'll be riding more aggressively enjoying it.

The best exhaust for HP would be the one made by Trask :D

Hey, LL Cool, I'm not worried just curious. On my twin cam just about everything you do 'costs' about 5 mpg.

I get 31 or 32 in mixed city driving, 34-36 on the xway if I behave myself.

Or an XR1200 ~ the only reason for considering gas mileage is if you intend to use the bike for any type of cruising. There are plenty of places, still, that you've got to be able to make it at least 150 miles from gas station to gas station.
