I seem to find the rev limiter several times per ride, especially when I am riding alone. Of course it's mostly in first and second gear but occasionaly third. The accelaration of the vrod is awesome and I need more, more, more. (no 12 step programs, thank you very much) So here are some questions. Will hitting the rl a couple times a week be damaging? A couple times a day? Does the ecm record each time I hit the rl and can the dealer hold that against me? I know a closer eye on the tach would probably be wise but I've got the disease now and I WANT MORE. Any thoughts?

Bagman I think that Rick Neilson or Bart will correct me if I am wrong but I don't see the pcm on the bike having enough onboard memory to record much data. It limits it's abilitys just to store codes and have room for the flash. It is not a very fast computer if I have to guess it is only running at a speed of about an old 486. As far as hitting the limiter I would do as vinny stated and get a shift light, the engine seems to make most of it's power below the redline with the stock camshafts so shifting at 9k should be more then enough. But the rev limiters job is to keep you from over revving the engine but it can't be good for the engine to get rocked three or four times a day as it gets when the limiter kicks in.

I agree - get the shift light - if you are hitting the rev limiter it is slowing you down and that pretentd tach is alsomst invisible under hard acceleration - I have hit mine way to many times and therefore had the shift light set at 8250 - as you tend to lose races when rev limiter is hit. I will be raising my rev limit and shift point this year - with the electric shift I should not need as much heas room - we will see...
I do not think that the ecm tracks rev limiter hits - and it never seemed to hurt my bike - except losing races for lost performance - generally .1 seconds per hit - although if you really lay into it you can lose .15 to .2 - just threw away 6 HP per hit.

Max- thanks for the input on the memory. Last time I went in for service the tech total me he cleared out the memory and he had a $hit eatin grin on his face so it made me wonder. Vinny's shift light is a good idea. The first mini-bike I owned (about 10 yrs old) had a governor on it and I ran it up to the max and my dad told me to turn it back down or I'd blow the Briggs and Stratton up. I finally just took the screw out and sure enough, blew the engine up. Can't afford to do that now!

http://www.pingelonline.com/electronics.htm - I think that John K had a different brand that looked interesting - I had mine chromed - but I need to check with Ozzy on the end peice with the bulb as it is brass at the moment - if you get it with a tether kill switch you can go to the drag strip and hit your rev limiter without getting arressted or hurt - and if you are good you could win some cash and bragging rights - chaneel that need for speed into a productive gig.

Kaz - do they do heads up at yur track - only for occassional test and tune entertainment at mine - grudge matches - but not competition series - Prostar and AHDRA VRod class are the only heads up classes I know of and you have to do the national tour to play that game - and be willing to modify to a level that is track only if you are going to be competitive. How is your build going - mine should be back from the shop this week or next and then to the dyno for testing.I will need to wake it up from its long winter nap.

the ecm definitely doesn't record what you have been doing, so no the dealer won't know, unless you tell them.
A shift light however might look a little suspicious, but not grounds for voiding a warranty.

Thanks Bueller. The light will be an after thought, I already look suspicious!

Vinny - suspicious- Bueller said the dealer may be suspicious of the shift light though it could void the warranty. Sporting a beard and general lack of drag racing knowledge the dealer I trade with would be more suspicious of me than a shift light! Actually the dealer is a real friend and would just laugh if I added a shift light. But, damn it boy, I like the idea! Even makes me think about going to the track!!!!!
