Swingharm shaft is stuck to the engine block

549 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Martin.Thomas
Hi guys,

I have a Vrod NRS 09, and im trying to disassemble the engine from the frame but the swingharm is stuck to the engine block.

I've tried the basic things, like brute force, wd 40, and a penetrating spray ( once a day for 7 days) but is still stuck.

Anyone has any useful tips for me to use?

Taking the bolt off from the other side might help to remove the shaft.. :D but jokes apart, can you turn the shaft around with a hex key.? The way I removed mine was to loosen the bolt and tap it with a rubber mallet while turning the shaft around (girlfriend helped with that).. Also move the rear wheel forward so it will take the pressure off the shaft!

Penetrating oil:
A piece of advice I came across but have not tried myself: mix a mix of varnish / paint thinner and oil. The thinner has the advantage of penetrating the smallest openings and will then transport the oil.

Heat! Start with a MAPP gas torch then proceed to oxy/acetylene.

As for penetrating oil, Knut is on track. "Best" is actually acetone and auto tranny fluid (about 50/50). Works even better than the infamous "Kroil". I own a 1990 DSM from the midwest. TRUST me, I know rust!

One more thought, put an impact gun to the hex bolt to get it to rotate. SHOULD happen fairly quickly with a strong gun.

If not done already support your engine below as well. Picture won't tell how you have jacked the bike. Pay attention to this.

Thank you all for your responses, I will try all the suggestions.

@hedgehanter In fact, when I try to turn with a hex key, the whole engine block lifts up, even with someone holding onto the block."

@mukle than you for noticing, when the bike is being worked on it has a support below the engine.

@Knut J @freudie1 I will try those options and i'll buy some Kroil as well ahah

ALSO, once you DO get the shaft out make sure to slather it with some nice copper anti-seize. I buy this in the large jar for all my rust buckets: https://www.grainger.com/product/3C...yAGUv_6gBN9pxXE99tkaAoT0EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Did you manage to take it out?
Do all of the above and spray as much rust buster as you can into that bolt. Get a heat gun, not a torch, and warm up the case as you turn the bolt. It will eventually break free and come out.

Hi
Unfortunately, it has not been possible to remove it yet. At the workshop where the motorcycle is being serviced, they suggested creating a grease nipple to apply penetrating oil. The oil has already been inserted there, as you can see in the image, and on Sunday, we will try to remove the shaft again with all the suggested techniques.

Great idea. Hope that it will loosen soon. Have you used pressure wash when cleaning the bike? I know this is stupid question afterwards but these are quite typical symptoms among wheel and steering bearing problems.

Thank you Mukle, indeed I have this bike since 2015 and I always use pressure wash, in summer it's normal to wash it once a week because I ride every day. You think it might be the cause of the problem?

And ideed I wish the shaft would come out soon, I have all the parts in the shelves to assemple this monster, with the SC kit with intercooler, forged engine parts, valves, camshafts, bolts, clutch oil pan and so on
Could be. When you eventually get shaft off and if it is heavily rusted you can assume that there has been water between.

If you continue using pressure washer avoid spraying bearings too close. Another is starter solenoid which does not like too heavy spraying in the long run.
