Hello,
Question.... Ever other bike I have owned has a safety switch that will not allow the bike to be put into gear if the kickstand is still down. The bike I just purchased(which is completely stock) allows me to put the b8ke 8n gear with the stand still down.

Is this normal on the 2003’s or has someone previously been messing around with something?

Thanks,
-John

The clutch interlock switch (starter would only function if in neutral or with clutch released) was added in 2007. A side stand (jiffy stand) switch was first used in 2008 but only on police and international model Harleys.

Normally it is not road legal here in Germany for example. Either the side stand flips in automatically when you raise the bike or the above mentioned side stand interlock switch must be fitted.
Neither applies for my 2002

Sadly, I can confirm that the 2006 VRSCD Nightrod does NOT have anything preventing the starter from kicking in if it's in gear, or on the side-stand, or both.

As a side note, have you ever tried catching a 300kg Vrod that had lurched forward off its stand when you stood beside it and hit the starter, not aware that it was in gear? Personally, I don't recommend it... But yes, I did catch it. ?

It only took me doing that once, now I pay special attention to look for the green neutral light before starting it. When it’s cold started I’m generally not sitting on it. I let it run about 5 minutes before taking off.
