SSG Povilaitis was killed by an IED on May 31 2012 in Kandahar Province. SSG. Povolaitis was assigned to the 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord. SSG. Povilaitis had served two tours in Iraq before deploying to Afghanistan. He was awarded the Bronze Star, 3 Army Commendation Medals, Afghanistan Campaign and Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medals. SSG. Povilaitis is survived by a wife, one son, two step-sons and one step-daughter.

There is a group called the Patriot Guard that honers these fallen heroes by doing things such a provide motorcycle escort and service flag lines. I have never seen another VROD participate and would love to seem more of our community represented. http://patriotguard.org

SSG Povilaitis will be arriving home the the DeKalb Peachtree airport in ATL tomorrow morning. We will be providing escort at about 0830. If you are in the ATL area and wish to honor this hero, here is a link to the mission, or you can pm me for more info. All are welcome.

As someone who works for a company (World Airways) that moves soldiers all over the world, nothing saddens me more than seeing Kalitta Air give one of them a ride home.

RIP, Hero. As a Patriot Guard Rider, I have been on far too many missions. I will continue as long as I am able. I urge everyone to do the same. It has a huge impact on the family. Forever. Joe

We escorted SSG Povilaitis from the airport to the funeral home on Thursday, and form the funeral home to the GA National Cemetery yesterday.

At the start of the escort in Atlanta, many cars ignored the funeral in spite of LE escort. Some seemed pretty pissed that this hero's funeral interfered with their travel plans. As we headed north the behavior of everyone progressively improved, with Canton citizens showing a great deal of respect and support. Although LE shut down the interstate northbound, in many cases the southbound lanes were also at a standstill with people showing their support and respect.

Didn't see another Vrod there.:(
