Was working on the broken shift shaft and after scraping out the oil seal I don't see the second (black) retainer ring.

I tried pulling out the shaft but it wouldn't budge and don't want to overdue the force and risk dislodging the spring.

I've attached a pic and I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if I'm supposed to see the black retainer ring?

After blowing up the picture, it looks like you did not get the seal completly out and is still in there. Try cleaning the area with brake cleaner to be able to see something other than grease.

That's also the impression I got viewing at the pic.

Did you ever get it figured out. I hate cliff hangers.

Turns out there wasn't a second retainer ring. I ended up ordering a new one and yanked out the shaft slowly and got the job done. Other than the shaft being tough to pull out, it was an easy job. Went with the Fitzgerald shaft.
