removal of wheel bearings and spacer

227 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Jay F
Needed to remove tyres from rims to get powder coated so at the same time as getting tyres removed thought “hey I’ll get the shop too remove bearings and spacers as it should be a quick process and save me time”. Got front wheel back today with tyre and bearings and spacer removed but the inner of the wheel where the spacer sits has obviously been pulverised by a screw driver or something. He Has put some hefty grooves through the inner where spacer sits. Will this effect how the wheel works? Tia

There should be no reason for anyone to take a bar or screwdriver after the inner spacer has been removed. Maybe I'm reading this wrong. Post a picture please.
And welcome to the forum btw.
There should be space between the wheel inner bore and the outside of the spacer, so it should not effect anything. Check ends of spacer for damage. Should be mark free. I'd be more concerned on method of bearing removal based on what you found with that bore grooving. New bearings should be used for sure.

Don't let them powder coat bearing bores. It will hinder proper bearing seating later.

I would run some sandpaper on the inside of that wheel just for piece of mind. The spacer is a loose fit in there so shouldn't be a problem. As far as the spacer is concerned, it is probably fine if you clean it up and make sure that end is not burred. But.... for the price of a spacer, you could just grab another one and be done with it.
Btw... that is some messed up work there. Someone was VERY aggressive removing that bearing.
It appears that no proper bearing removal tool was used. Screwdriver and hammer perhaps. Bearings are easily gone when removed by hitting the inner race

Wow.. I'd have some choice words for that company and never use them again.
