refinery vs. mixer

so i see people here like amsoil and mobile one, me i like shell rotella.

but thats not here or there, this is a question of why some like oil mixers as opposed to oil refinery companies.

companies like amsoil, valvoline, royal purple or store or manufacture band are mixers, companies like moble, shell texaco are refinery.

the differance is mixers will buy oil from were they can get the cheapest (generally not top tier) oil then mix in their additives were when you get a refinery oil it is top tier.

I use CAT sae 30 special blend ( low Sulphur) on my CABO 3126 diesels

The old perkins on my other yatcht get west marine Rotella.

Amsoil amd Mobil 1 are high end full synthetic oils. It just doesn't get any better than that.
Where do the refineries get their additives from?

kinda self explanatory

How so? They separate the light from the heavy but the additives have to come from somewhere.

There are companies, actually a lot of them that specialize making the additives only. Oil companies mix to their specs from there.

exxon/mobil, shell,chevron/texaco and bp all do there own, and are refineries (the largest one at that)

Sampling and testing has the final say.Who gets what from where is secondary to the desired result achieved from the construction of the product.Blind adherence to a brand or heresay statement is marketing at work.
