Yeah I didn't realize that part of the 19 mile trip to the summit was dirt roads. I had seen the races on TV before and saw the dirt roads, but assumed that this was a different section of the mountain than what normal traffic traversed. WRONG! My wife has never ridden on dirt before so this was an experience for her. My worst fear was looking in my rear views and seeing her laying out in the road. She did well but got a little light headed at the top due to the altitude so we didn't stay at the summit very long.
Pikes Peak is dirt but you can also drive up to Mt. Evans just west of Denver, it is all paved to the top. At one time, it was the highest paved road in the world. Not sure if it still is. It's over 14,000 feet also.
