When I was raving about our trip Monday night, I forgot that I'd had one "problem." The DH said that, now and then on a hard acceleration, a cloud of black smoke would come out of the pipes. I know it's running rich because the 020 map is for going topless, which I don't, but the black smoke is a new one -- could it be the Canadian 94 octane gas or some new adventure created by the 10k service?

I'm still not thrilled at the idea of having my local dealer do the dyno tuning with the PCIIIr, so I'll be calling around (again).

Any insights would be appreciated.

I just called Laugerman's in York to see if they do dynos with the PCIIIr - to my amazement, the answer was "we don't mess around with those."

Max, the weird thing is that nobody has mentioned this happening before. We rode with another couple alot all summer and I'm sure Kathy would have mentioned it before, since she always rides sweep.

HI Derek. Thanks for the good advice.

I just tried it and discovered the lean and mid-range settings are already as low as they can do.

Am going to try to reload the 020 map altogether now to see if I somehow lost the map, then adjust it.

Dang!

Well, I took it in for the 12,500 service today and let them dyno it. I specifically asked for "before" and "after" print outs. Went to pick it up, no print outs. Can't remember the reason. The tech who did it said that I was getting about 86 rwhp before and 90 after, he didn't remember the torque values. I said I should be getting 100rwhp or above. He said different dynos will give different values...

Took it out for a ride, country roads only. Might not be getting much more hp for what I paid, but it sure seemed to have alot more in the lower RPMs at lower speeds and 'way more in the highers.

*sigh*

He told me, but it didn't sink in. I'll call again tomorrow and ask. I wanted to get some feedback from you guys first.

He said another v-rod with Sampsons gets 90 on their dyno, too.

Yeah, Kaz, good thing this doesn't reflect on my manhood.

So, if it's their dyno and a measuring error, then that's one thing.

If it's not their dyno, then what? I mean, what does it mean that the hp is so low and what do I do about it?

Thanks, guys.

Thanks, Max. I can't make any sense of it, of course, being just a GIRL!

There's no question he did SOMETHING to it -- it's definitely running better. I'll have a chance to check the gas mileage today.

However, I'd really wanted the print-outs so I could ask you guys to check out what he did and make sure it is right.

And, if it was OK, I was going to download the map and offer it to others who have the same setup and want to keep their tops on. But, who would want THIS number???

Might go out and make them do a print-out for me next week when it starts raining again.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

WOOHOO!!

Got out for a nice long ride today, mostly backroads, about an hour on the freeway. I don't know what he did to it, but this is a completely different bike. I now have a first gear that actually works. He added about 15-20 miles/ tank in gas mileage, depending on the kind of driving and how aggressive I was (went through 3 tanks - freaked out on the first tank, then remembered that the dyno messes with the fuel gauge, it settled down about 50 miles into the first tank). It's much quieter and it doesn't stink so much. And, most of all, it's SMOOTH between every gear and in every gear. It's an unbelievable difference!! I should have done this the day I got the v-mods and filter. That 020 map with the top on SUCKS compared to this!!!!!!!

Mark, that's very reassuring - it's just what I was hoping you'd say. The performance difference confirms that their set up is messed up and I'm going to print out your message and take it in with me. I will still ask for the run to get a print-out to pass by you guys. But this sure made a difference in how the bike feels.

Except now I have a leak -- different thread...

THANKS!

I got some kind of print-out, too, but it's only mph vs. "corrected rear wheel hp" and no rpms or torque values. Doesn't look anything like what I was expecting. The tech said something about he couldn't do the torque thing because there was nowhere to connect it??????

duh...tx

I'm thinking ftp, blah blah...

In case you can't tell from the filename, my setup again is stock v-mods with the K&N filter, run with the top on. It's a modified 020 map.

John - reality check here. Did you mean that the first one (the one on top) is my new one? It's the one with the lower numbers.

Yup, it runs MUCH better for me this leaned out. But remember I ride like a touring GIRL and he was going for gas mileage. It's a rare occasion I get it much above 5000rpm, so maybe I'd see problems if I did.

What does the stock map look like? Do you have it?

It's still interesting to me that it didn't start blowing smoke until after he did the 10k service, with the 020 top-off map both before and after.

What could the reason be that the top-off map suddenly seemed to make it run 'way too rich?
