Over the winter I had the alternator cover gasket replaced due to an oil leak. After riding a few weeks I am noticing more oil. It looks like it's coming from the same place under the cover...

But, I am also seeing it dripping down the front near the oil dipstick. I replaced my stock dipstick with the chrome VRSCA one. I checked and it is on tight, but could the oil still be leaking from there while under pressure??? I don't know how else the oil could be getting there. Any ideas?

Any ideas?[/QUOTE]

Barry in AZ has an '02 and it started leaking at what appeared to be the base gaskets as the oil seemed to running down from there and onto the area around the dipstick. He took it to Arrowhead Harley-Davidson in Glendale, AZ thinking they would need to pull the heads to replace the base gaskets. As it turns out, they found the oil leak up around the top of the engine somewhere and they told him it was a very minor repair. You might want to email Barry at [email protected] or visit his website www.cyclerides.com and ask him for more detail and perhaps who you should talk to at Arrowhead HD to better dial in just what was done. Feel free to mention my name: Dana F. Welch. Good luck and keep us updated.

I have a very very slight oil leak that shows underneath my alternator cover. I have had my dealer fix this a couple times already, including replacing the gasket to the cover. It goes away for a while then returns. Not much of a leak but a leak non-the-less. It turns out my cover is warped, and the one the dealer has in stock is warped also. According to the service rep, they have had several of these with the same warped problem. It will be a week before they get a new one in but at least it is covered under warranty and mine(that had a deep scratch in it from somewhere) will now get replaced...... Hopefully, the one that gets shipped isnt warped too.

I've heard of service guys taking the cover and lapping it on sandpaper to remove the warpage. Also heard it's more common on 'A' models, cuz the chrome has high and low spots on the seal side.

I had a severe leak from the Alt side and replaced the gasket. It has stopped for the most part but occasionally I do get a small amount of oil under the cover which I wipe off. Not much anymore but still a small amount.

Mine was leaking out at the wires in front. It was the seal at the stator.the complete stator was replaced because the seal is an integral part of the stator.Appr 7000 miles since the replacement and no oil leaks. The dealer told me that the stator seal had been revised and they keep um in stock.
