Hi,

I have a 2007 VRSCAW. My Fans stopped working. I installed new fans and they dont work. I ran the bike to see if the fans came on before the overheat light did and the light came on first.

It started with one of the fans blowing a fuse so i disconnected it and ran with once fan for about a year. then the second fan stopped working. I then jumped the fan with a switch and manually put it on when I thought it was needed. Now it no longer work with the jump so I bought new fans. I put them in and they do not work.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? They do work when i jump them.

thanks

My 2 cents -
When you Remove and replace the MAxiFuse the fans should spin up for a few seconds and then back off...
You know that you can switch the starter and fan relays - they are the same, and test it that way.
Switch them with the MaxiFuse out!
Could be a bad coolant temp-sensor?

IIRC the wires for the fans run up the left hand side Radiator shrouds and can get beat up in there.
If yours fans "blew a fuse" maybe there is a short somewhere?

Steve,

thanks for the reply. I'll try the MaxiFuse and see what happens.
I'm not sure what the relays are. I'll try to figure that out. I know its not the fuse since the same fuse runs the insruments and there not out. I'll also look into the sensor.

When the ECM determines it needs to activate the fans it puts a ground on Pin 2 (White/Red wire). This activates the Fan relay which in turn activates the fans.
'
You can test the circuitry from the ECM to the fans simply by grounding the W/R pin 2 of the ECM or the W/R wire at the fan relay. This should turn the fans on irregardless of whether the engine is running or not.

I found a thread that says swap the fan and starter relay to see if the fan relay is bad. Where are those relays on an 07 VRSCAW. under the seat on the fuse cluster there is only a system relay

thanks for any help

look behind the right most triangular grill near the front of the bike. There should be a fuse box there with the relays in it.

I will test the circuitry to the EMC tomorrow.

for now id did swap the relays. when I did the bike would not start so I know they Fan relay is bad but the fans did not spin when I pulled the MaxiFuse and put it back in.

Thx Rusty - I have related issue - hope it is not my ECM.
06-D - 14.5 k miles

-This spring put maxi-fuse in and no Fan Run up.. 1st time that has happened
- Swapped Relays- Maxi fuse goes in and Fans spin-up and back off. Bike Starts.
later on did Distilled water full flush and Peak Global with water wetter added.

Tested- got it warm and let it sit on stand . Fans Cycle on an off - 75 degrees out.
Ride it get it warm. idle it on stand, 3-4 minutes fans come on, ride it and get some air, fans go off.,
Thought all is well.
Few months of of riding in this hot weather, comes on a little and goes off as expected.
1/4 percent Water Wetter may be helping a little.

* Installed New Powervision - added a few display gauges RPM, Speed, Volts
all worked except "Coolant Temp"
It is one of the Display choices and should work.

So I think, ECT Sensor is bad.
Did the maxi Fuse Test again today after reading this post. Fans did not spin up.
Swapped Relays - Maxi fuse in - Fans spin up - bikes starts.
Fans seem to cycle when necessary. Bike is not overly hot (opinion)

Above my PayGrade: Could the Thermostat or ECT Sensor be sending a signal to the Fans like it should when needed - but is not sending a signal out so it is not reaching the Diag port where the PV interfaces?
Engine Coolant Temp is dead when added as a parameter to display as a gauge.
I "assuming" that means my overheat light will not come on - Doh!

I plan to get 2 new Relays and install a new Temp Sensor??
All opinions/experience on this one appreciated.

And Thanks for this tip- the W/R wire at the fan relay test-

If you remove the horn (on left side) and look straight across between the cylinders you can see it at the inside base of the Vertical Coolant Tube that you see on the right side.
I found it and checked the wires and unclipped and re-clipped mine. No change
I need to dig in more on it But I think you can use a long Socket to reach in from the left side and remove it.
Need to drain fluid first. You can save most if it.
Peak Global Lifetime Coolant is the same stuff in different package.

It's a pain to reach it w/o removing stuff but can be done - so:

I am topless stage1 - and have an extra modified AirBox Bottom to swap in so when I do it
I am going to remove the Vel Stacks etc, and do it with the airbox off,
and Replace the relays for good luck.

Removing the MAxi-Fuse for most work particularly electrical is prudent! - But you know that!

The fans do not always come on when I replace the maxi fuse on my 2007 vrscx. Been that way since birth. Nothing to worry about.
As to your PV not displaying properly I do not know anything about it but if the fans seem to cycle when they are supposed to I suspect the PV is at fault not the H-D pieces parts. Replacing parts that are working will not solve a problem.
'
I would contact the PV folks for help on this one.

Good idea- call pv
good info- "The fans do not always come on when I replace the maxi fuse on my 2007 vrscx."

Pretty sure I have never overheated mine - so the overheat light maybe fine for all I know.
Have you overheated yours and had the temp light come on?

I flush and fill the coolant every 2 seasons or so and use water-wetter additive.

I bought new relays since one of mine was bad. Fans still do not spin when i pull and replace the maxifuse. Fans do run when i jump them. Is the next step to test the ECM? where is that and what does it look like? If its not that do i replace the temp sensor? Why else would my fans not come on?

Did you look over the Post Rusty posted on the subject?
are you running a PCIII?

You said you blew a fuse - so maybe you got a short-or rotten fan wire up under the shroud? ?
check the grounds?

"recently had a fan issue with the P1481 code. Turned out being the wire connectors coming from/going to the fans. I exchanged my fan relay with the starter relay; still didn't work correctly, only sporadically. I took those connectors apart and they were corroded beyond belief. I bought new connectors and the fans work good now."
