Needed: Instructions for Upper & Lower Beltguards

:helpme:
I picked up brand new,in the box, upper and lower beltguards from the Swap meet in Chicago. Both boxes were open and one had a locknut in it. But both had the directions :deal: missing :hmm: . Is it a straight forward exchange or are there any torque values I need to know ? Are there any tricks. I also have the 200 tire so I need to trim a little , Any success with rust retardant paint or something else work better ?
Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Bob,

Piece of cake. Here's the blow by blow:

Upper:
1. Loosen lower shock bolt and pull it out just enough to not protrude out the back of the swing arm hole
2. Slide the belt guard off by pulling it out the back of the bike. You'll see that in addition to the rear shock nut it's held on with 2 rubber washers, one in the front under the pulley cover and one near the middle on the back side if the swing arm.
3. Installation is the reverse of removal

Lower:
1. Remove the hex bolt from the bottom of the swing arm.
2. Drop the cover and pull back, you'll see it's held in place with a rubber washer inside the front pulley cover
3. Installation is the reverse of removal.

I would fit the new ones and see if there's a clearance problem before I started to cut anything. It seems that there's enough tolerances that some don't need any modification to fit.

Thank you.
I will try the pre-fit before trim.
The new lock nut simply replaces the old.....Correct ?

It should be for the new upper belt guard. The stock upper has the nut built into the guard on some models.
Thanks again- The scoot is out in the out building(shop) all snug in its' bed.

BobT, check the actual clearence between your pulley and the guard too. I've seen some pulleys scraped up really bad because the belt guards rubbed on them. Steve.
I believe the chrome guards are thicker than the guards you remove. I forget which one, but one of the guards was attached at one point by sliding it into a rubber washer. The rubber washer with the stock guard is not wide enough to slide the chrome guard in. The kit should come with a replacement washer that is the right thickness, so you might need to find a new one if your kit didn't come with one.
It did not come with it. Anyone have the instruction sheet ,maybe look and see if individual part # 's are on the sheet(they are often on the sheet). Thanks alot Jav
Thanks to all of you.

BobT,

Considering selling my chrome upper & lower guards (depending on how they fit with the 200 Metz) and going with the Rizoma. If I do I can send you that piece. Will know by Friday.
Don't screw the next guy ......
I am not a cheapskate - I would just get the part from the stealer.
I do appreciate the offer.
But the person that buys it would be right back in my spot, heck they may be from the forum .
I sure hope they fit with the 200 tire----I have a brand spankin' new one on the back of my scoot!!!

Just offering you a quick fix - I can always pick up another one if I sell it, obviously wouldn't want to put someone in a bind.
I used original rubber washers and had no problem
I'll check my instruction sheets when I get home from work tonight and let you know.
Thank You all.
I am in no rush.
It is cold and snowy here .
I am thinking of putting in a furnace or some sort of heater in the shop , but we'll have to see after tax time........
Til then I wait impatiently for warmer weather.
Again, thanks for all the help.

I had the chrome guards on my bike but I customized the original and put it back on. I'm thinking the only thing that was different was that the Chrome upper guard had the rear mounting nut tack welded to it instead of being a seperate part. Steve.
Well, unfortunately I must have thrown my instruction sheets away. But it is the upper belt guard that has to slide into the rubber peice. If I remember correctly I don't think it would be easy to get the new chrome guard into the stock rubber washer, but if you could slide it in I'm sure it would hold fine.
I just installed these last week. The lower guard should have come with a new grooved, rubber isolator, you have to undo the screw that holds it in place and replace it with the provided isolator re-using the washer. The plastic lower guard is thicker than the chrome steel. If you do not replace the isolator, the guard will not fit tight. It slides into the isolator, it is a very snug fit.
Okay, I found my instructions. For me, the only difference for the upper belt guard is that it didn't have a nut as part of the belt guard, so it came with a locknut to use. The locknut is Part Number 7433M.

For the bottem debris deflector, you have to replace the front mount deflector (rubber grommet). The one for the plastic guard is a different thickness than the one for the chrome guard. The new rubber grommet is Part Number 67633-01.

You could probably make this work with stuff from your local hardware store, but those are the Harley Part Numbers from the instruction sheets.

I just tightened them snug, but from the instructions the lower debris deflector's screws should be tightened to 6-10 Nm (4.4-7.4 ft-lbs). For the upper belt guard you need to losten the shock bolt to get it on, and that should be tightened to 41-68 Nm (35.4-50.2 ft-lbs).

I hope that helps.
Thanks everyone,
I am going to jot this down and get a new rubber grommet Part Number 67633-01
Thanks very ,very much.

Post a pic of your stock custom job here so we can all see.

Thanks,
JMAN OUT!
