I would be stunned if it's the same. The owner (Nathan) claims indeed it's an unauthorized China copy. My guess is it's loaded with some shit leds that are worth what you pay.

None the less...pretty lame to **** over a guy that developed a drop in/plug and play led light for a niche bike (and made it affordable). Some people.....

Hey Guys Thanks for the link! Although I'll probably go with the hoglights as you have I think it's always good to see what else is out there and how things stack up dollar for dollar. I agree that it's an obvious copy right down to the plate design behind the lense and it is a shitty thing to hijack a design that someone clearly spent a lot of time researching and developing for what is admittedly a niche market but that's the way of the world it seems especially with overseas products. There's not a popular item out there without an overseas knockoff. That being said I did ask for the link! Lol. It's more for curiosities sake and to see what we're dealing with when your able to compare the lights side by side since you ordered both. There couldn't be a more perfect test from someone completely unbiased with knowlege of our bikes and the way the stock light performed (didn't). I have to agree with you guys though if there's one true statement in this world today for the most part 'You get what you pay for!' Like you said buyer beware but for that kinda money why not, even just for a spare if you don't receive yours for a while. After speaking with Nathan and seeing his product I was sold though. Just to be able to call someone that's polite and has amazing knowlege of the product he sells goes a long way with me. Honestly I'd be shocked if you could even speak to someone regarding the other light if there was a problem. Nathan on the other hand responded to me immediately with any questions I had and is generally just a solid dude. Anyway I must admitt, I really look forward to the comparison of these two lights when you recieve them, performance and build quality wise. At the end of the day I think an oil burning lamp hanging from the front of my bike would perform better than the stocker. Let's face it everyone's got a budget of there own so at least now there's some choices out there to keep everyone a little safer. Nathan's product will stand on its own regardless because of its quality, his knowlege and the way he treats his customers. What's that other saying? "Immitation is the highest form of flattery"

My hoglight got lost in the shipping process.
Nathan will refund me because I didn't want him to send me another one, because it's on the other side of the world.

I told him I already ordered one from China, and Nathan had no problem with it

he's a good guy to deal with and always answered directly to my messages..

I'll post some pics of my knockoff when I have it installed, don't kill me or hate me for it :spank:

Haha no worries my friend I hope I speak for everyone when I say I don't think anyone can fault you for that including Nathan, you tried and it just didn't work out due to circumstances beyond anyones control. I'm still really looking forward to hearing how that other light performs and I and anyone else that purchased either of them can let everyone know what they think as well. Not sure where you live but for me up here in Canada I'm gonna be more occupied with riding my snowcoard than my bike until late to maybe mid March. There's already one good review on this thread about the hoglight in the same situation as me weather wise so once everything warms up we can all chime in about how we think these lights work with some real world testing. Cheers bro! I hope that light works great, let us know what you think when it arrives!

Ok!

So I just finished installing the Hoglights Australia LED light for vrods.

The unit I installed has the chrome backplate.

Here goes:

The headlight arrived in excellent packaging. No issues there.

Instructions are a bit off (at least for a Muscle/VRSCF), but I'll explain more about that in a minute.

Physically, the headlight is a bit shallower than the OEM headlight. It's dimensionally the same otherwise (even the same angle on the front).

Wiring harness/connectors:

This is where it gets "interesting". Mind you this is in relation to a Muscle, so if you have a different model Vrod I have no idea if this applies......

Two issues were present that I found.

First, the connectors are very nice as they have appropriate waterproof rubber plugs on the back of each connector. However, what I found to be an issue is the presence of bare wire.

Stock Wire harness/connector from Hoglights:

As you can see in the following picture, I disassembled the connectors on the light (use a small flat head screwdriver and release the two prongs from each connector) and installed techflex and heatshrink. MUCH cleaner and safer:

Secondly, the high beam connector had the pins in the wrong position when I inspected the plug before disassembly. In other words, the black wire MUST match the black wire on the OEM headlight harness to the bike's connector. The included instructions even state this. On the unit I was sent, the labelled "High beam" connector had the pins reversed. Easy to fix, but worth mentioning.

Installation:

Be careful to ENSURE that the black wire on the headlight plugs match the oem plugs black wire pin. On my bike the high beam plug is actually keyed so that you can only plug it in one way. That's how I discovered that the wires on the Hoglight's unit was reversed when I was installing.

The instructions state a standard "Allen key" size, however being metric in my garage I found a 4mm allen wrench to do the trick just fine. Word of caution: I was unable to remove the oem headlight from the Muscle bracket after only removing the 4mm bolt on each side of the headlight. I had to loosen the two 6mm bolts at the top of the bracket/fork to slide the light out from behind (NOTE: due to the Hoglights unit being shallower this is not required for removal/installation of that unit).

Results:

Head on shot of light installed:

Side shot installed:

High and low lit up:

When it decides to stop snowing I will align the headlight, however as you can see this light is bright, fits well, and with some small modifications plugs into the oem harness with no issues. Great piece for the price!
Freudie!

I forgot it was you that purchased the hoglight and gave me all that info! Did you get rid of that snow of yours and hit the street with that light yet or are you still trapped like me!?

installed mine, here is the light output
Hey Thunderdemon

Thanks for the pics! Its hard to tell what it would be like long distance but from those shots on a background like that the light output looks really good actually! Looks to be pretty crisp with nicely defined borders and good bright concentration where you need it in the pattern. I know it's impossible to say long term but if you don't mind me asking what did you think of the general quality of the light? Does it seem like it was well built? Any flaws or sloppy imperfections in the build quality or wiring? It'll be interesting to see what you think once you get it on the road with some long distance testing but it sure looks considerably brighter than stock... here I go off topic again but I gotta ask...It looks like you've got a big tube fork kit on there, looks good along with some blue LED's in the guage where did you get those? I was looking at exactly those same mods. The fork kit I was looking at was from AR Harley I believe and I was looking at sending the guage to Ghost Rider but I was thinking of doing the LED install myself if possible. I'm a hands on guy, I like the challenge and so far have done all the work on my rides myself although I'm thinking the LED install might be pretty tedious and delicate.

Thanks again

Hoglight

I just received my Hoglight from Nathan. It only took 5 days to get to me in Cincinnati, Ohio from Australia via DHL. Now that's fast shipping! Unit appears to be a quality, well made piece. Bolts right up like factory headlight. Can't give much feedback on the power of the beam as it is light snow and cold here. It is definitely a brighter and crisper light than stock. Really bright in my garage! Biggest decision for me was should I get the chrome one or the black one. In the end I went with the chrome.

Snow remains. Life in the great North West will do that. I'm likely without bike time until end of March (when "spring" or some such season happens).

All the winter does is cause me to spend money.....2 project cars plus a never ending v-rod addiction in a heated shop lead to that. :)

Just received the Hoglight from GR Customs today. Installation was simple, but I had the same problem as Freudie - the high beam wires were backwards. Switching them was simple provided you have a jewelers screwdriver or something with a small, flat end to get under the spring-loaded locking clip of the two connector pins.

Once the pins were swapped, everything worked fine. Looking forward from the back of the lamp assembly, the left connector is the low beam and mates with the black socket. The right connector, obviously, is the high beam and mates with the white socket.

Also note the Hoglight lamp housing is not as deep as the OEM and results in a small gap between the Hoglight and the two-pronged fixture on the Muscle. It's not at all bad and nobody but a VRSC guy would notice, but I might take a Dremel to the detachable OEM black plastic housing and cut it down a bit to attach to the back of the Hoglight, thereby closing the gap.

I've attached some pix. Draw your own conclusions, but I was gobsmacked at the difference. Great job Nathan (Hoglight) and Aaron (GRC). Worth every penny.

How would you know?

If you don't have one from Hoglights to compare it to, then how do you know it's exactly the same? Does the Chinese one come with a 5 year warranty like the Hoglights do? Why did you by 2, expecting it to burn out?

You are right in the fact that it does look the same as the Hoglights unit. I e-mailed Nate over at Hoglights and told him to check out the conversation we're having here on 1130.com. He said that he would check it out. Does the Chinese light have the DOT SAE 9 printed on the bottom of the front lens? Thanks.
