My near-term plans for upgrades include new tires, UE tank and slipper clutch. In preparation for that I first removed the stock exhaust from my '05A. The manual says to take off the top muffler, remove various heat shields and fasteners, then to remove the head pipes, 3rd volume and lower muffler as a unit to preserve alignment of those pieces.

I had trouble moving the exhaust flanges off of the studs, then trouble expanding header pipes enough to get them off the heads. Some small amount of scratching happened.

My question is: should I loosen the header pipes, 3rd member, etc. before reinstalling to avoid crushing the new gaskets, avoid more scratching and make attaching the flanges easier? Will I have problems with re-alignment of the exhaust if I loosen things for re-installation?
