The diffrence would be you have no top box!

No actually he may not of. I read your post and it was not clear what you were talking about. Were you talking about the external airbox cover that's on top, or the top of the air filter housing.
Also if you are having problems then I would suggest that you get a service manual. Its pretty much a necessity if you are going to do any wrenching on your bike.
