Bought a '05 1250 SE engine. Looking for head gaskets as I have pulled the heads cleaned and c/o valve springs for stage 2 cams.

Cometic only has gaskets listed as 4.017 (1130) and 4.25 sizes listed. Does anyone know if this is the 4.25 is right gasket for the 1250 or is the only option is HD OEM ?

I don't know about Cometic head gaskets but HD used three different head gaskets:

1. Early 1130 cc engines used 17625-01K/17626-01K (front/rear)
2. '05 & '06 SE and '07 VRSCX 1250 cc engines (105 mm = 4.134”) used 17691-05K/17692-05K (front/rear)
3. In 2008 a new head design resulted in new 105 mm head gaskets 17691-08K/17692-08K (front/rear)

These newer 105 mm gaskets don't fit the earlier 1250 cc engines.

Beer.Tom.Rod Iv'e got similar questions but you might want to use the H-D OEM gasket on that '05 engine it was unique in that it was a bored out early 1130 case and had CNC ported heads and coated skirt pistons for that year. I can't understand the Cometic sizes as there is a 4.250 overbore for the V Rod engine but what is the 4.017 size for ? A 3.937 standard bore plus .080" larger diameter = 4.017 but a 4.134 1250cc bore plus .116" larger diameter = 4.250 so if they are measuring the I.D of the gasket bore why the difference ?

I'm installing '06 S/Eagle CNC heads on a 2010 case so which would I use ?

Stever975 do you know why the newer 17691-08K and 17692-08K gaskets do not fit the earlier 1250 engines and visa versa ? Maybe this is the answer.

The HD "Technical Forum" literature from 2008 states:

NEW Head Gaskets

• New 105 mm head gaskets have a geometry change and use an improved material
• Will not retrofit on prior model year 1250cc VRSC models

The pictures posted show some holes in the old gasket not present on the new version but I haven't seen each myself so I'm not sure what the specific geometry change is.

Ended up getting hold of tech support from Cometic, the 1249cc 4.134"/105 bore gasket is not listed on the website or in their catalog.
The part # is C-90203. I was able to order directly from them.
I'll post up when I get them to confirm they are correct.

Also got the part numbers for the ARP 10mm head studs/washers and nuts. Ordered them directly through my buddies local engine machine shop who uses ARP all the time, once I get those will post an update. Got some prices from places that sell them down there (me being in Canada) they were a little too rich for my blood at $200 US that's $258 Canadian. Got them for substantially less.

Beer.Tom.Rod hey that's good news - they don't even show the 4.250 gaskets on their website so they are kinda cryptic. Parts Giant shows the Cometic 4.25" .030" compressed thickness P/N 327820-542963 which I'm assuming is a Cometic #C9898 head gasket as the fit for your '05 CVO Engine, but again why would you want a gasket bore that's larger than the cylinder bore ? The 4.134 gasket makes more sense for a 4.134 Bore but did they say .027 or .030 compressed thickness ? I'm going to call them as well as I've got '05 S/E heads on 2010 1250 cases so I hope they know what I need.
stever975 sounds like the '08 and up H-D gaskets are the right ones for my '10 1250 cases so I guess I just need to be sure they will work with the earlier S/E heads. The earlier 1130cc P/N 17625-01K and 17626-01K have 4 brass grommets that locate the gasket and I believe control crush thickness so if the '05 S/E engine is a bored out 1130 case it's H-D gaskets may include this feature. On the newer 1250 case there is no pocket for these brass grommets on the case head surface but you may want to look at your S/E case and your old gaskets Beer.Tom.Rod to make sure you are getting the right gaskets for your unique engine, but maybe the Cometic gaskets have taken this all into consideration ? :blahblah:

I should have the new gaskets within the week or so, I will keep ya informed.
they offered both thicknesses .27 & .30, I used the .27 last time I installed my custom heads on my 1130... no issues. I ordered the .27 for this application as well.

Sounds good B.T.R. I spoke to Sam over at Cometic today he couldn't find the C-90203 but he did find the C9203 ( I also found them on CP pistons website ) He also said that by adding a -030, -040,-045,-051 on the C9203 base # you can order custom thicknesses ( to lower compression or compensate for the deck height I assume ) I found a photo of the unique '05 S/E head gasket P/N 17692-05K on ebay - it has raised sealant peaks and the brass grommets are outside of the diameter of the stud circle ( unlike the 1130 gaskets I have ) and the Cometic C9203 also has the brass grommets outside of the stud circle so I guess Cometic did take all this in consideration. I wonder how many guys assumed the 4.017 was the 1130cc gasket ( which it is ) and that the 4.250 was for the 1250cc ( which it is not ) not knowing that the C9203 4.134 was even available as it's not on their website or catalog. So yea, a lot of guys have probably inadvertently lowered their compression by having an oversize by .036" I.D. head gasket on a 4.134 bore. Big Fun. Anyway thanks for bringing this up right on time for my engine build, I would rather have these Cometics than the stock H-D head gaskets. Double Cheers Tom ! :blahblah:

That's some good info there! But why in the world would cometic not list those gaskets!?
