H-D could easily build this: Chromoly framed, conventional layout with a single shock. USD fork, all suspension fully adjustable. 60 in. wheelbase. Modern rubber on an 18 front 17 rear light wheels.

Air/oil cooled V -twin about 55 deg. 4 X 3 Bore &stroke. 75 cubes. 11:1 CR, 4V heads w/single cam each, roller rockers. 8500 RPM redline. 100HP and more available. Dry sump with oil in frame. Counterbalanced, 6 cogs. All major castings magnesium.

Very traditional styling of the engine and some parts bin engineering makes it a Sportster replacement ranging from the Custom thru the XR. Max weight in sport trim 480 lbs.

Stuck at home Sat. night just thinking....

They did, sort of. It was called Buell.

Honestly I don't know other than the fact that they have decided that they are not interested in attracting younger customers with a more sporting appetite.

Put a male slider fork on this with belt drive and you are most of the way there. This was supposed to replace the Sportster.

Look carefully and you can see the predecessor to the FXR frame, complete with rubber mounting of the engine. I would buy something like this if it was available. A normal motorcycle.

The Wakan is superb and I' m a Sportster nut but I want the motor updated to spin up like a Revo and still look trad. We could use the whole Vrod rotating assembly! To show how far H-D has not come, a 1999 Cyclone will smoke an XR1200 by any measure stock for stock.

Wow, I never saw such a great pic of that bike, though I read of it. Excellent and poignant - the road not taken.

A superb French motorcycle? Is this guy 8 feet tall?

Or, considering this pic makes the bike look more than one lane wide, maybe the rider is more like 10 feet tall...

It just won't work. It's all about peer pressure with the young crowd. Period. Well, that and bragging rights. If it ain't the popular bike, the new fad, the new Busa it ain't gonna sell. (Like everything else)
The Buell was a work of art but not enough HP, so no bragging rights. Harley for 108 years now has never really been about speed, performance, handling, ect. Never. So why the surprise now? People have been predicting their demise for decades regarding this same issue. For Decades! :D

My sons 1125R Buell was fairly good for hp/tq stock... Buell was working on getting more power but in HD's once again logic dropped him... I haven't heard diddly squat as to if he's started up his company again, have you?

The Rotec or is it Rotex (can't never remember) motor in that 1125R is very similar to the Revolution motor, very reliable motor and with a few changes here and there he could have got that motor to produce 175 to 195 ponies which would have made his bikes more competative against the main four sport bike makers...

Seems like HD didn't like it that he was putting a better motor in his frames instead of the gutless sportster motors they were providing him... HD will always be behind the technology curve because people will still buy them as is, pay up the kazoo for it, then dump another $2500 into it just to get the motor running right with the only exception being the V-Rod and they haven't made any major changes to the motor since it came out or offer different models with the Revolution platform...

I don't know if they'll ever go under but the boomer generation is gunna start dying off here over the next five to 10 years and it seems like most of the young turks coming up don't have the same loyalty to the name so who knows what the future will be... I'll be long gone and in the ground when and if they ever do go under and I can gaurantee I won't by another "new" one...

Stay away from the magnesium. It isn't compatible with many other metals at all and it corrodes to fast. It's great for the automobile manufacturers because late model vehicles get traded every 3 or 4 years, then recycled.

Awesome, Sammy! What keeps HD from making this! Sweet! Joe
It would become a cancer to the MoCo like the buell did.

That guy was just faster at the dinner table than his brothers were.

Vambo; Harley for 108 years now has never really been about speed said:
Utterly inaccurate statement. H-D was HUGE in all types of competition from it's inception. Endurance runs, roadracing, hillclimb, boardtrackers (8 valve motors!) desert, enduros, Bonneville streamliners, liquid cooled 2-strokes,etc. They WON Daytona in 1969,just one example of too many too count. World Speed Record 250cc-176 MPH 1965. Need we mention flattrack or dragracing? And the under-funded VR1000 which got vey close to fruition.

All history and not what's happening now, granted. But before the Japanese got serious (and for a breif time thereafter) H-D was very serious about being competitive technologically. They battled fiercely with the Brittish for decades. Privateers battled the factory. If you wanted the baddest performance, kick all asses streetbike in the '60s you bought an XLCH.

Parkhurst,Petralli, Passolini, Lawwil, Markel,Werner,Rayborn, Andres,Reswebber,Parker,Springsteen,Reiman,Roeder to name a few,all roadraced, dirtracked and tuned. Did you know the first motorcycle under 9 secs. in the 1/4 mile was a single engined H-D? In 1971 piloted by Joe Smith. Then in '74 he went 8.20 with a double engine Harley. Wanna line up on your 30 year newer Vrod?!

Check out a great book: "Harley Racers" if you're interested. It wasn't always about chrome skulls and the "biker image" business model of today.
