Hello forum .

I dont ride too much at night but recently I noticed the rear cylinder "Y pipe " was dull red .

I've done a search and read some threads but haven't come to a final conclusion.

I've read this is normal ? It cant be ......check engine light is off . Thunder Max diagnostic page is saying everything is OK .
Bike runs good as far as I can tell .

Auto Mapped it anyway but pipe still glows in the dark . I may be sparking a debate here ( again ) but those kind of EGT's can't be good for turbo - can't be good for anything .

Can anyone recommend a base MAP or solution to this issue ?

What rpm range does it glow? Do you know how to work with Tmax maps?

It'll glow dull at 4000 rpm ( approx . 60 mph ) and appears to get brighter the more throttle I throw at it .

Pretty new to the thundermax but please explain and I'll try to follow along .

Thanks fella

I would expect a dull glow a 4k. At idle, then you have a problem. Keep in mind, flame come out of that pipe and that thin wall tubing will glow at some point. More rpm, more flame intensity and more glow. More aggressive throttle will force a flame of richer mixture further down the pipe. I'd say you are likely ok. As for Tmax, I don't have the software any more. For a ball park evaluation, view both spark plugs for running even. The front pipe gets more cooling air, where the rear is shielded more and will run visually hotter.

Thanks Ron ,

All you are saying makes sense......well sorta ?
With all the R&D put into HD's first overhead cam motor the issue of glowing exhaust on the rear cylinder only just cant be something the design team could have over looked.

HD paying attention to every possible detail on ALL their bikes ( & charge a premium dollar ) this issue had to come up and a plausible solution or conclusion has had to of been made .

I've read several threads with non turbo vrods involving this same very issue . I'm not saying you're wrong Ron .

Just a hard pill to swallow

Edit : bike works well ....always has

I can tell you this, positive my Akrapovic head pipes are red in those rpms. 321 thin walled stainless don't turn that color otherwise. Bike is tuned well so I ignore it. Stock exhaust also showed more heat effect on the chrome then the front. Between less air blowing over it and the fact the rear cyl does run a tad hotter then the front due to coolant circulation path, I say you are worrying over nothing important. As for hurting the turbo, some applications , not bikes, run hard actually glow red.

My V&H shows little glow too when the bike is ridden like it should( 0ver 5000rpm) for a longer period - not just a quick 1/4 mile run. I take that as a result of a well built engine with a decent power output, not at all as a design fault of factory.
EGT directly relates to exhaust gas velocity, in that as the exhaust temperature rises, the gas moves at a higher velocity. With an internal combustion engine , the EGT will rise as the engine makes more power (or as the air/fuel mixture leans out, but I don´t see Gevarliks situation that way). Some builders even wrap the turbocharger with insulating hood to get the higher EGT to boost the power even more.

On a carbureted V8 engine I used slightly larger air jets (Weber IDA carbs) for warmer mid summer days to lift up the EGT a tad to gain more power. On the dyno session that street driven L88 engine - by the way -heated the Hooker headers up so intensely I was thinking they will melt down and slither to sewer . The headers were over red glow and almost yellow at WOT.
So, glowing headers = Power:cool:

Have to respectfully disagree on a lot of that.

High EGTs typically = lean. I use EGT probes on some of my projects on a per cylinder basis as a way to find lean cylinders/injector issues/fuel rail design issues/issues during a 1/4 mile run etc.

Does red header = boom? Not necessarily, however I certainly would be logging O2 sensor data (WBO sensor if possible) when tuning/concerned about glowing headers (as the OP is). Too much data and technology on hand now a days to assume.

FYI, turbo blankets (or proper ceramic coating) are typically used to keep underhood temps manageable.

I was writing about my own experience about two different engines. They both make/made awesome power (measured, not assumin anything).
None of those engines were running lean, the exhaust temp upscaling was just to pump up the power which it did.

Starter of this topic runs ThunderMax setup so the widebands are already there, possibly auto-tune too.

Really?o_O

Some poor b--tard is in need of your advice as well in this dyno session

I'm in a shitty mood so I'll bite on this as well.

CLEARLY he isn't or doesn't know how to read log data. Honestly this is a waste of time thread as one could/should use the data at hand (or buy O2 sensors) and read their shit.

This forum has turned into the "Tuners" forum of the Vrod world. Figures as the bikes are so damn cheap now.

Hey let's talk about carbs and ancient shit I don't care about now so you can "school" me.
