I keep a close eye on my tripmeter mileage, my fuel guage gets stupid frequently, will go to E for some time, then float back up to a quarter while riding. Absolutely rediculous fuel guage, I wish it had a reserve, I haven't got burned yet, run out of fuel.
I may have answer for your fuel gage problem.Look at the shape of the fuel tank, and where the fuel level sensor is located. When you angle the fuel nozzle toward the front of the tank the fuel stream drives the float to the bottom of the tank. With high a rate of fuel being pumped,it just compounds the problem.Once that happens it takes a long time for it to return to normal, sometimes it doesn't until the fuel is burned down below the float level.I started angling the nozzle toward the rear of the tank and not squeezing the handle so much.problem solved. Hope this bit helps
