I have been riding for 15 years and I just bought a new 2011 NRS. On my second tank of gas I ran out of gas (fortunately I was right near a gas station). The gas gauge still showed 1/8 of a tank and the distance remaining on the digital readout was 22 miles! I expected this to be more accurate and similar to a car where even on "E" you have miles to go. Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks...

I've never heard that complaint before...:hidesbeh:

Gas gauge mainly tell ya that you have a full tank and you might have some gas after that. I use my odometer to calculate approximately my fuel level. I did the same thing with a Electra Glide that I used to have.

Just cause you bought the name brand Harley Davidson, doesn't mean that you bought something that is worth something. You bought the name brand.

do a topic search.. there are LOTS of treads about the faulty fuel gauge...thats why the sarcasm

in short
The first years (02-06) V rod had a mechanical floater in the old style tank to measure fluid height. To keep a reading lots in the US had to clean the resistor strip.
My 05 never had any problem, I think because there are no premixed pump fuel additives in europe.

The bigger tank from 07 brought a new sonar style reader. It measures the surface level with echo sound.
The reasons why the newer style gives problems are divers. but do mentioned it at your dealer as a complained so it is registered.
IMHO the additive in the fuel could be the reason... the alcohol vapours in the tube could be misleading the sonar..
We can fly to the moon but not make a reliable fuel gauge

There Are More Glaring Stories ...

... of the perfidy of the V-Rod Fuel Gauges. I myself have run out of gas twice, both times with the gauge reading just under a half-tank, both times within sight of salvation, the last time on 12 July, the same day, I think, my outside thermometer recorded 123.8degF. The lady at the house right by where I coasted to a stop poured ice water in me (2 qts), took me to get gas, filled my 16oz travel mug, then gave me a bag of 'maters she'd just picked. :notworth::notworth:, Melanie!!!

Problem with the trip odometer thing is that in bright sun, with sunglasses on, without my bifocals, I can't read it.

Oh, yeah,

I have a friend that gives me a bag of maters too.Lasts me almost the whole month.

and about the fuel chekin sticks on these mototcycles.Wouldn't it be nice to have a dedicated spot for the Bon-Ami can? A few times,I've forgot to shake the Bon Ami onto the the level chekin stick, and I couldn't get a good reading either.Thought I was on empty, but quite the opposite of most other V-Rod owners,I had more than I measured.

if we relied on HD to get us to the moon, we never would have made it to the top of Everest!

I've run out of fuel toooo many times to count. First time bike showed 1/4 tank and I had it towed to the Stealership in Ohio (Centennial) where they promptly charged me $150 to tell me it was out of gas. Second time I was 4 miles from a fuel station 6 miles from home, so I called wifey rescue to deliver a gallon of gas. Now I carry a 32oz MSR bottle of fuel when I go out for the day. I've used that lord only knows how many times now.

Hmmm maybe with a HD flztrllukdzztrflhse8 (that has a ipod :D)

Me stupid have stood out of gas too.. i wase so brave to my buds with my 5 gal new feul tank 'naaah don need to fill up yet, no problem' ....... sputter sputter sputter in the freakin mountains on a sunday no f...ing gas pump open :paper:. I had a spare air line for the shocks with me rolled up in the airbox... god was i happy with that... siphoned gas out of my buds softtail drip by drip (line is pretty thin).. and oh mg that feul in the mouth sucking it up is so horrible dirty.

These are my first bikes with a gage and i have never trusted them. I trust the trip meter and my math and have never ran out of gas on them. thier gages have always been all over the map and aren't worth the down time to hassle replaceing.

OK, I just became a vindicated 2012 Nightrod NOB!

I thought I was going crazy watching the fuel guess meter drop like a rock on a 32 mile commute to work; that is after a "fill to the top" fill up.
So, now back to what I have always done with a new bike - fill her up, fill a 1gal Jerrycan strap it on, set trip meter to zero and ride till it stops - make note, cuss at the bad mpg while dumping in 1 gal out of Jerry can and seek out a petrol station.

And I thought that only BMW made fuel gauges that only have entertainment value.

I have MSR bottles on all my bikes. If you like to mod, Agri Supply has some great document holders where 32oz MSR fit in perfectly. Mind you I am a NOB Nightrod owner who is coming from the dual purpose scene.

A little MEK will take the yellow markings off and then just have fun mounting.

I think I am on 5 times running out of gas.. Keep trying to push past the 170 mile mark in town...
