Night rod special

This would be much better bike if the controls were mid mounted like the night rod. Can you mid mount the special?

Or you can find someone with a D who wants to swap and just go part for part (have to swap lower frame rails too).

Don't forget the rear motor mount. If you are a DX you are going to need to to go to mid controls.

Got me...try making a new post about it and see what other folks have to add. This was just listing the part numbers. Or you can go on Zanotti's site and look up all the part numbers.

Everything from LSHD1.com cost me about 590 and I got free shipping.

There is a guy that is trying to make it so you can do both and I believe he did it succesfully. But I just had my mids removed because I am big and I feel uncomfortable with the pegs under me anyway.

PM me if you have any questions.

This does replace the mids, however you can choose to leave the pegs from the mids in place as this option does not replace the motor mount. I found that the mids would hit me in the calfs when I put my feet down in a comfortable position so I just removed them completely.

The left side pegs came off cleanly leaving no evidence of the pegs, the right side has the 'pivot shaft' left behind and the cut out on the heat shield. Both of these can be replaced if you want to clean up the look of the bike.

I had a dealer do the whole job for me and it cost about $700 in parts and another $300 in labor. This was the first time the dealer did a Vrod control swap and they were interested in doing 'something new', however the service manager cautioned me that labor could be up to 5 hours. In the end the dealer charged me only the time spent wrenching on the bike and not for time researching the how to in the service manual or for mocking up the changeover.

Which is the way it should be, IMHO.

So, what are the details/instructions for eliminating the pivot shaft and substituting the motor mount? Thanks!
You need to get the bike on a lift. Craftsman or similar bike lift works good for this as the motor will be supported also. A car jack will help also to support the rear tire. You will need to pull the swing arm shaft. You can leave the shocks and tire bolted up. Then just unbolt the engine mount, bolt up the new engine mount, and reassemble everything.

You can have both, but having dual brakes takes some more plumbing parts. Check bad vr's thread about his R on this. I have dual shifter on my A, just needed a longer bolt where the shift rod bolts on to the shift shaft lever, to bolt both shift rods together. I just made a spacer to replace the brake lever, so I just have the foot peg on mine. I actually didn't even buy the the engine mount for this, just bought the longer engine mount bolt and bolt all the pieces on and it works great.

Is the engine mount that replaces the mid-controls mount a custom made part or something that can be ordered from H-D?

BTW....thanks for the info!
