This is my original post. Please read on for my update on page 2

Well guys and gals I have to say that for the most part I disagreed with all the HD dealership bashing. (The "stealership" comments and so forth) The reason was simple: The folks down at Harley Davidson of Fort Myers were absolutely fantastic to work with.

They are one of the dealerships with the cafe and free coffee, soda and snacks that some people talk about but they didn't fall into that category of "only looking for the sale".

They have always been very helpful, never got hard sold on anything, got a great deal on my '06 Street Rod, great service from the service department and most of the sales people know my wife and me by name.

I just got off the phone with that great service department. I requested a copy of the custom SERT map that I paid them to make. They said they would give me a copy if I would supply a disc and $100!!!!

I was more than prepared to supply the disc or USB drive or whatever they needed to download the copy but I was stunned when they said it would be $100. I already paid them to do the work, now its just sitting in their computer taking up space.

Obviously this infuriated me to no end. I haven't call the manager yet, I wanted to calm down first and speak to him in person but I will. They can, and will, lose every bit of my business over this $100. It's not the money but the principle.

So here's what they will lose: :soapbox:
1. I will forever buy my accessories online from Zanotti's.
2. When my wife is ready for her own bike, I will buy out of town.
3. My wife will stop buying clothes, except online.

All this for $100. Am I over-reacting?

Anybody have a similar problem and how did you handle it?

I got my map file for no charge.. You paid them to develop it for YOU not for them to hold over your head every time you may want to tinker with it or even if you want to go to a different dealer or dyno place.

Our HD dealer has been good also, but when you buy a bike that has after market exhaust and air filter on it, they charge you for everything including the SERT, but they hold the SERT in a drawer there. When I found out they were holding the SERT (took me a month to dawn on me they had to have one to load the map), I asked the sales guy for it and he said no problem and went and got it. He said that he forgets to give them to people until they are dumped on his desk once a quarter and told to contact the customers.. Don't know if this is true or not, didn't give them the chance.. ;)

I would tell them to get ****ed for a $100. FYI you can just download the racetuner file yourself with a cable and a pc.
I thought with the SERT you couldn't download the map from the ECM.. It was a one way deal. Are you saying you can or are we talking about a different fuel module here?

Just remember from this point forward, whenever you go to a HD Stealership (or any stealership, car, mortocycle, boat, etc), bring your KY. Business is about the money and nothing else. All that cheap free coffee and popcorn and other BS is just smoke and mirrors.

That'll teach em! Haha. Just kidding.
No, I really don't think you are. Some of us are lucky, but most of us have some sort of drama with a dealer. I'm in the PGR, so I see a mix of riders on every different brand, and I have heard a million times "blah, blah, blah, so how did Harley treat you, blah, yeah, I wasn't going to pay that much to be turning a wrench in 5 years so I went with X brand, blah, I used to ride Harleys until these big dealerships opened up and they're just like car salesmen so I went with BMW and they couldn't be nicer, etc".

But don't forget, that's why this forum is so awesome. We don't get the support from HD, so the smart ones among us can pass on ideas and information, and we can avoid at least some of the hassle. Good luck.

Dont bring KY, its Petroleum based and bad for you, bring Ero's or Astro Glide they are water based.

You can not retrieve a MAP once it has been flashed to the ecm.

Thanks guys. I'm going to use your examples when I talk to the manager.

Anyone else have this done for no charge? The more examples I can list, the better.

PS Bill, I love your plate. I almost went with VRSCR.
Yep I got mine free too, I forgot my thumbdrive when I had it done and went back the next day and the service manager took me to the computer in the dyno room and down loaded it for me, he told me if anything ever happened to it, to come on back they keep them forever and I could get another copy anytime.

Very nice guys in the service department at Man O'War HD in Lexington KY. I recommend them to anybody looking for a good honest service department.

:them: That's like ordering a part, paying for it, then when you come to pick it up the parts guys says, "Well, it's $100 for me to go in the back and get it off the shelf." :bs:

Fort Myers HD Back on Top for Me

Guys,

Thank you all so much for your input. After I calmed down, I went down to Fort Myers HD. Both my salesman and the sales manager happened to be talking together so a perfect opportunity presented itself.

As always, I walked up and they said, "Hey Dave." (Like I said before, they know me by my first name.) These two guys are great and have always been so from day 1.

I simply asked if they could give me a $100 voucher for the service department. (Just a way to open up the discussion.) The sales manager asked what I did I mean by that. I explained the whole story and he looked a little perplexed. My salesman said, "I'll go talk to the service manager and find out what's going on."

After a minute or two he came back out and said to come back and talk to the service manager. He was really cool as well. He said he heard there was some talk about a custom map download that a customer wanted but there was some confusion about the whole situation. I explained to him what I wanted. He said, "That's no problem at all. I'll ask the tech to get you a copy for you. There's no charge for that."

It turns out that it was just a misunderstanding. They apologized and hooked me up with the map.

So.....after all of that uproar...I have to say that I am compelled to jump back off the dealership bashing bandwagon. I know it's a business and they are in it to make money...(who isn't in business to make money?)...but these guys really are a great bunch to do business with.

Thanks again to everyone for their input. I took it personally that "my" dealership wouldn't help me out the same way that many dealerships across the country helped all of you.

Now that it's all settled and it turned out to be miscommunication, I feel a lot better and I apologize to Fort Myers HD for causing such an uprising.

I was really starting to worry about missing out on the shop talk and free Cokes and snacks! :popcorn

Also, to all you local South and South West Florida guys, I set up a ride to Lake Okeechobee on July 15th, 2007 starting from Fort Myers HD. Check my post titled, "South West Florida VRod Ride."

Kickstands are up at 10 am.
