Dx Owners Beware!

If you have a DX that was made in the past few months, keep a close eye out on the starter system. I just got my DX a week ago and today the starter failed to disengage. Didn't know that until I rode it home from where I started it. It melted the neg battery post off the battery before I could disconnect it. I suspect the started is cooked and it remains to be seen were the teeth went.
The early warning sign seems to be that the yellow and red engine lights that usually go off after a few seconds will stay lit on the speedo. I read posts from other DX owners on this site that this has happened to within the past couple weeks. My dealer was not aware of this issue. I suspect Harley has gotten a new supplier for 07 solenoids or they were changed for the worse somehow. It appears to affect the 07s only.

MOCO, hello are you there?? With all the people this has happened to, I can't believe the moco doesn't admit it's an issue. I know my dealer had a long conversation with them on this. I suspect some dealers may not have encountered it since it depends how many rods they have on the road, but the factory HAS to know it by now. They need to find out just what IS doing this whether it be faulty solenoids or what.

All, my bike did this little number on me today. I started the bike and road down the street to the stop light. As I was waiting on the green light I noticed an odd noise coming from the engine, I leaned over and it sounded like it was coming from the front of the engine. From reading these previous posts, the first thing I thought was that the starter was engaged! I turned the engine switch to off and the bike didnt want to shut down, the starter was still trying to turn the engine -- I popped the clutch a little to kill the engine then restarted the bike with no problems. After I restarted the bike, the noise was gone and no more problems. This was the first time this has happened...I reported to the dealer and they showed no recalls or anything for the DX but thanked me for letting them know...if it does it again, they will take a look and replace if needed....Whew! A little scary but something I'll continue to watch. Oh, there were no lights on when this happened -- everything appeared to be operating normally.

I've Probly Started My Dx Over 100 Hundred Time In The Past Three To Four Week And Not One Sign Of Problems... Think Of How Many 07 Bikes Are Out There And The Percentage Of Parts That Can Be Faulty From The Manufacturer... Auto Parts From A Part Store Have Average Of 2% Chance Of Be Faulty Right Of The Box... I'm Sure Motor Cycle Part Are The Same... So If There Are At Any Given Time, 100,000 Hogs On The Road Then There Could Be 20,000 Thousand Bike That Are Going To Break Down... That Not Just Talking About The Soleniod, Thats All The Parts That Are Subcontracted... Knock On Wood You Don't Buy The One Who Has More Three Or Four Faulty Parts... That Statistic Is Like Winning The Lottery Though But In The Bad Way... That Is Just My Thoughts And Opinion, Not Fact... Keep The Front Tire Down...

Where do find the build date? Last digits are 803455, book says sequential #. will be going to dealer for 1000 mi next week and will surely bring solinoid/starter up when discussing the scoot with them. So far so good and lovin' it.
Your dealer should have given you a "build sheet" which is often called the bike's birth certificate. The build date is on that sheet.

My "W" had the same problem (cooked starter motor) happened 27 Sept and a "new" 07 solenoid wasn't fitted till 14th November - 07 solenoid is different than all the previous years ; no codes were thrown because of the problem ;dealer replaced the starter motor , the starter switch , the run switch and the solenoid , flushed the engine oil twice and two new filters, all seems ok now - build date 06/06 - the workshop jury rigged an 05 solenoid on the bike so that it was useable .

I have about 2000 miles on mine. Plenty of let me hear it starts and no problems. I still getting used to the controls, no buttons on the '81 hand signals and kick start have pushed the start button instead of the blinker. Everything is working fine. Built in August near the end.

Today I pushed the starter button by accident when the bike was already running and the starter kept going. I then cut off the engine and it stoped. It did started right up though. I wonder if that's something that would happen with all DX's etc. Please advise.

I think that it will help alot of '07 owners if those who have had this starter problem check on their build number and date built. Hopefully their dealers gave them their VROD's "birth certificate." That will help isolate the problem, if a new i.e. solenoid was used during that build timeframe or they hired a new monkey to install the starter, etc. My DX was built on Wed 0032 (I don't know what that number means) 092006; last 5 digits on the VIN is 03015.
So far and I am knocking on the wooden table, my DX has been OK.
:ithappen: But things can get fixed.

The dealer is pickin up my DX on Monday afternoon. As soon as I get more info on this issue I will pass it on to the Forum members. As I said before, this is unacceptable for a 1 week old $17K+ motorcycle. What even makes this more ironic is that the trip I just finished when this happened was to a local dealer to pick up an 07 service manual. It must have been an omen.

this needs to be fixed at the factory, before the consumer ever gets it.i would hate to think i have an 07 bike and have to start checking codes.
I agree. That doesn't help those who already have their bikes. If there is a code that is being thrown with this problem, then it's easy to check and give you peace of mind. That's all I'm saying.
