FXSTD...OK, I'm beginning to learn the letter designations of some the air-cooled bikes. The softail series is about all I care for. It's easy to see why a Springer is called a Springer. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between a Fatboy and a Heritage.

What makes a Deuce a Deuce?

The Duece has the skinny front tire. Somewhat raked out - V-rod fender on the back(dogs ass looks similiar) not too appealing to me on that bike.

Deuce has a straight tail and stretched tank. The pipes are different. Handlebar pullback is different. Is there something about the bike that is "2" that applies to no other Harley?

Standard...

I think the Deuce is a sweet bike as well.... rode a friend's around for a few minutes to see how I liked forward controlls, I did, and that cleared the way for me to get a V-Rod.......

Present company excepted, I think the deuce is the best looking bike the moco makes.
:them: Always liked them. Test rode one and really enjoyed the ride.

The Deuce was intended to be the direction the aircooled Harley was going. It had a drastically different gas tank, it is where the vrod's tail light was designed, and many other small and large details. Like the R, it was not as popular as the Mofo MoCo would have liked. Geezer glides for the Wild Hogs are what sells.

Sometimes ya gotta feel sorry for HD. They just can't escape their own customer base.

What makes a Deuce a Deuce?
Here is a quick guide:

Basically, there are 5 families within the HD line. They are:

Sportsters (XL)
Dynas (FXD)
Softails (FXST or FLST) - FX = skinny front tire and FL = wide front tire
Touring (FLH)
VROD (VRSC)

Each family contains several models which are basically identical except for some minor cosmetic differences and/or extra features. For example, you mentioned that you sometimes cant tell the difference between a Heritage Classic and a Fatboy. These two models fall within the softail line. They are basically identical bikes. Strip the windshield and bags from a Heritage classic and you got a Fatboy. Since these two bikes are in the Softail family and both have the fat front tire, Their letter designation begins with: FLST. The Fatboy adds an "F" at the end to signify it's model designation (FLSTF) The Heritage Classic adds a "C" or FLSTC.

Dynas are the same way. Because every Dyna has the skinny front tire, their letter designation begins with FX and the "D" is added to signify the Dyna family. So... Every Dyna begins with FXD. Then the model designator is added. For example WG is added for the "Wide Glide" or FXDWG.

The Touring line is probably the most confusing because of the many different models. The letter designation begins with "FL" since there are NO skinny front tires on any of the touring bikes. "H" is then added to signify the touring line. So... all touring models begin with FLH. Model designators are then added to identify the various bike within the family. FLHR for the Road King, FLHTCU for the Ultra Classic.

I think we all know the VROD line pretty well so I won't elaborate on the VRSC line. Sportsters are easy because it's always XL and then the engine (883 or 1200) Then model designators are added. For example: The Sportster 1200 Custom would be XL1200C.

It's pretty simple once you learn them. The problem is they change every year LOL!

What get's me, when I look at people who buy Harley's now, is it seems that baggers are the thing. I loved Low Riders, and wanted one, Fatboys, and wanted one, the Deuce, and wanted one. Now everyone's buying a freak'n bagger, not that there's anything wrong with that. Oh well, they don't know what they're missing.:angeldev:

So "Deuce" doesn't mean anything significant...nothing to do with the number 2? It's just a name like "Heritage" or "Sportster"?

A few weeks ago, a girlfriend called me from the Vanishing Point, a biker bar, and begged me to come down there, so I did. She was there with a few mutual acquaintences. One of them, Julie, said "Sherry tells me you have a VRod...you need to get rid of that shit and get a Road King." Knowing her husband was listening, I said "I wanted a 21st century motorcycle, not a Conestoga."

Today was sunny and 85*....perfect riding weather, and I was stuck in my office all day except for lunch, a run to the PO, and dinner. I saw about 20 groups riding from 4-10 in a group. 90% were baggers and most riders were young people.

I agree. I like stripped bikes. Putting a big motor and churching up a bagger is like putting a mini-skirt on a fat girl to me.

Nice.... nothing like shutting down a mouthy chick that knows it all. We need more bike grrls like we have on the forum here. I dig the shit outta a grrl who really knows her bike. Major turn on. Those "I know all about Harleys coz my boyfriend has one, aren't I cute in my bad girl clothes?" chicks wear me out.

I like to tell those a-holes that just have to try and beat you down over the vrod "Yeah, and you probably have an ice box and home. I prefer my refridgerator with ice maker". People that dis others rides are just insecure and looking to prop up their own bike decision. Kinda like religious people always telling you that you need to join THEIR religion.

Oh, yeah!!!...Last year, I bought my VRod with my girlfriend, who bought a 1200L Sportster at the same time. Riding with her was always an incredible experience, especially after the ride. She rides like a guy, can run a bulldozer, and is into the whole cowboy culture. We were gonna fly out to Montana/Wyoming and rent HD's for a week for our honeymoon. It all fell apart after she was charged with voluntary manslaughter.:banghead:
