:banghead: Has anyone had problems with the destroyer clutch hub cracking? For some reason I have been breaking clutch hubs every time I go racing. They crack along the large snap ring groove. I am thinking of welding around the groove to help support the hub. I have tried different clutches, packed clutch at different thicknesses and it still cracks. Everything else, including the V&H clutch basket and transmission shaft are fine. I wanted to go to Tulsa, but without getting clutch hub problem fixed it would be a waste of time. Any help would be appreciated.

It has happened four times, two times in two races. I use six washers on the arms the middle static spring with a .050 shim and harley clutch plates, have also used energy one plates.

How long have you been running the [email protected] clutch basket? Also, what was the last thing/ adjustment you made to the clutch before this problem started or did the problem start after a brand new set of plates were installed?

I have always had the V&H basket and used the same set up only this year I have a new motor and have gained 20LBS. Ray Vreeland told me I should use a heaver static spring.I am going to try that this weekend at my local track.

You're probably aware, but TULSA was canceled this week do to bad heat conditions.

Have you ensured proper alignment of the pressure plate and hub?
It's easy to think that they will fit in any of the five positions, but in reality they only fit up correctly in one position. :spank:

I have not noticed any cracking yet, but I recall reading some ancient threads on the topic :banghead:

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you weigh more wouldn't you want to lower your static spring pressure? Allowing the clutch to slip a little more to get you out of the hole without bogging. This has been the base of my problem the entire season so far. Went with medium (heavy duty) springs and bogged, then went with the lightest springs(medium duty) plus .150 of shim under each one and started bouncing of the limiter almost instantly.

I weigh 300lbs in leather, 850 on the scales after a pass. I got the red springs in with no shims and leave at 7500 to 8000 with no bog on stock gearing. We are in the process of changing the gearing to get a little better 60' and to be farther into 5th in the traps. The taller MT or Goodyear is messing with my plans:mad::mad::mad::banghead::banghead::soapbox:

You're on the correct principal, but also look at final drive ratio, going lower on the front sprocket and or higher on the rear will also help

To start, I didn't mean to take away from this mans thread. I wish him well with finding his problem.

Now I am totally lost. I way 240 with leathers and helmet. LOL what a nightmare this has become. Try try try again!

So you think I'm going the wrong way with my rear sprocket? Should have went up with the # of teeth?

Going lower on the front gets you out of the hole faster but you'll have to do something to keep you from running out of gear at the big end.

I was told @230 lbs. I need the red springs,four washers on arms and adjust leaving with tire pressure.

Sometimes I think the variable, is the power the engine is producing, yours has been graced by the hands of Ray Vreeland, I'll bet that baby is ticking & kicking wonderfuly.

I do not think I have the best tune, so I am still working around the Tire & gearing factors. I was thinking of putting the ROBS DYNO tune back in my ECM, I know his tune helped me last fall! :D

Have yet to even put mine on the dyno. Just another expense I can't afford at the moment. Bike seems to be running pretty fat right now and has a hard time idling which I am sure is a part of my problem. For now I will stick with gearing changes.

Also, with the M/T, I have enough gear to go way past the trap. I think I will try a tooth less on the front sprocket. Thanks for the tips gang. For some reason I was thinking the opposite but now it makes sense. Rookie mistake, hehe!

It seems many of us are wrestling with clutch setup, gearing and the effect of MT/New Goodyear slicks on our setup. Does anyone else think it's a good idea to start a new thread dedicated to these questions and comments? Would be happy to get one started now.

Still breaking clutch hubs, anyone else use a V&H clutch basket? I check ever part out and can't find anything wrong. I'm at a lost would like to go to Bristol if I can get this problem fixed.

I'm puzzled as to why your going through so many......
Do you frequently rebuild the pack, for the purpose of swapping order of plates & frictions?

I know if some local racers who are big on that operating procedure,the thinking is they improve the longevity & consistency of the pack, especially after it's getting tired.

If, so all the pieces ( like the beveled washer/ring, ordering the plates properly, matching the inner hub to the pressure plate in the correct (and only one of five possible positions).

Loading the rebuilt pack into the basket so that it's fully seated and the input shaft nut torqued down.
Any lapses in this might be a root cause, OTOH you have had a string of weak hub's.

Did you get the replacements from MTC as each broke?

Two of them are from MTC the other two are from HD and I installed the button myself.The clutch plates are all installed right, I always stack my clutch plates in a dummy basket and slide them in all together. I am thinking of welding up the snap ring grove up to make it stronger because that is where it cracks every time. If anybody has any sugestions I could use the help. Thanks
