Just got my bike last weekend. Where the seat flips up, there are tiny scratches on the stripes on the airbox cover. The seat covers them so I'm not terribly worried but is this common?

Yes.

If you switch to a smaller seat, then it becomes an issue. Don't ask me how I know.

Get some 3M paint film and put there.. You can cut it to match the contour of the seat and it is very durable and will not wear down over time. I end up using it anywhere the paint needs protecting including on the frame bars right next to the seat where your legs rub as you are riding because that will scratch over time as well..

BTW, any minor scratches can be taken off with Maguires swirl remover 2.0.. Just mask off the denim so it doesn't get on that area.

I put a tank bra on mine for now but, the 3m is a good idea too.
