2003 VRSCA with 26k miles has been running fans when normally it never did. Red temp light illuminates for a minute +-, but motor does not seem exceedingly hot. Would a bad coolant sensor ($25.06) create both of these issues? Changed anti freeze last year, it's not leaking externally or leaking into cyl, coolant tank level unchanged. Thoughts? THANKS

Yes the sensor will cause both symptoms. The red light comes on at around 240* so there would be no question it being hot. Fans normally come on at 217-220* and off at 208*
I take it you did the air bleed when you changed the antifreeze? Mind you, any actual overheating would have happened then, not a year later. It's not pointing to a tripple sprocket because you feel it's not overly hot. Rather the sensor reading hotter then it actually is.
The resistance of the sensor at room temp should read between 900 and 10000 ohms and drops as heat increases. If out of range, that could be the problem.

Thanks for your replies. It turned out to be the coolant sensor bad. I also pulled the alt. cover to thread lock the bolt as previously described, it was barely torqued to spec, thanks again
