California State Legislation: Motorcycle Lane Petition (DML)

We, the undersigned, as citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the State of California, petition for a Designated Motorcycle Lane (DML) to be constructed on our Interstate Highways. The popularity of motorcycles has increased dramatically and now calls for reform to our California Interstate Highway system. This reform will satisfy all highway motorcycle concerns voiced form the general public, including all; Traffic Congestion Organizations, Air Pollution Organizations, Traffic Safety Organizations and many of the concerns voiced from the environmentalists. With the massive increase in motorcycle sales, motorcycle usage is at an all time high and continues to grow. We need to face the fact that motorcycles are becoming a major factor in our transportation life line. We can no longer look at this industry as a recreational past-time. It is a fast-growing major form of daily transportation. Traffic congestion is, and has been, out of control in California for some time. The increase of motorcycles does not add to the problem of traffic congestion, it lessens the effect with fewer 4-wheel vehicles on the road, less pollution, less fuel consumption, less parking congestion, less roadway wear and tear, and many other earthly benefits. All these positive results will have a direct effect in lowering the State, County and City expenses, allowing those monies to be used elsewhere.

Safety alone justifies that a Designated Motorcycle Lane (DML) needs to be created! The motorcycle industry, even as much as it has grown, does not have anywhere near - the problems cause by motorists. There are far more accidents with cars, trucks and SUV’s than motorcycles. And, the accidents caused by motorists among other motorists, especially when a motorcycle is involved are far more critical than motorcycle accidents alone.

A Designated Motorcycle Lane (DML) will greatly enhance motorcycle safety and will further increase the general public to ride motorcycles for their daily commute, resulting in the many benefits of greatly reduced 4-wheel traffic on our roadways.

There are several ways in which a motorcycle lane can be created without the high cost of construction. A valid example is; the far left lane, also know as the “fast-lane” (not the diamond land) can be label as the Designated Motorcycle Lane (DML). This is a most simple and most inexpensive approach.

More motorcycles can utilize a lane more efficiently than cars, trucks, SUV’s or big rigs. Just one lane of 4-wheel traffic eliminated from our highway will result in billions of dollars saved and a immense amount of benefits to our environment.
We, the undersigned, petition California State Legislation to favor the bill of creating a Designated Motorcycle Lane (DML) on our California Interstate Highways for the good of all residents of the State of California.

Great idea....

But then the cops will have to keep the cars out of there....

Just imagine the cagers sitting in their cars getting pissed watching bikes ride on by them:deal:

Do you think such legislation has a chance? Do you think there should be such lanes in all states?

Count me in. I just signed. Would be no more of a enforcement issue than carpool lanes. Big fines = cagers stay out... Much easier to enforce than carpool lanes.

What would it take to have such a lane created in your state?

They already do! We not only get to ride in the HOV lanes, but we can split lanes anytime!

I can see this not being a problem for legislation to pass. If you think about it all they would have to do is widen the diamond lanes and add a separate line for MC only. Furthermore, its also an accessible lane for CHP to use in case of traffic emergency. Also, with the state increase in traffic fines, this would be some additional revenue the state would rake in with violaters. Which would more than pay for itself. Especially if they make it as stiff as the diamond lane penalty. This is way overdue in my opinion!

I'd sure vote for this here in Indiana. We( bike owners) just got hit with an additional $10 per year for " Spinal and head injury research" started July 1 on registrations. Supposedly our Govenor didn't know it was on the agenda. It was hidden. He is a bike rider too and didn't see this. BS!! MITCH THE BITCH signed off on this!!!The powers that be are saying that motorVEHICLES cause more of these injuries than the motorCYCLES do.If the additional $ 10 that I am going to have to spend each year to plate my bike would go for this, then I'M IN. Just me.

nice idea, but in california (I just moved away) it'll never happen. The freeway is already congested enough...Too bad, it would be nice.

Good idea, but it will never happen. We can't even afford to repair our roads which are rated some of the worst in the nation.

I wish they would do that here. I have thought of it before but didn't think I would ever see it happen.
