In the process of diagnosing my recent rear brake failure the dealership called and they said that the break switch sparked, leaked brake fluid and the melted. Could a faulty brake switch cause the brakes to fail?

and if your bike is one of the newer ones that use DOT4 fluid, that switch is knows to prematurely fail

Ok, I got a question for you guru's out there... DOT 3 bad jew jew, eats paint... DOT 5 pain in the a$$ getting the air out, great for cleaning painted parts... DOT 4? I've heard some say it's bad on painted parts but I haven't seen it... Is that correct?

dot 4 does eat paint... it really isn`t recomended to change to a different fluid as it can cause real problems with the rubber parts in the system... and there have been a lot of brake light switches leak and some even blow the end out under heavy breaking and loose the the brakes ...
